Nonhuman Primates Homosexual Behavior: A Critical Review of Literature
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper provides a critical review of the literature on nonhuman primates sexual behavior. Reproduction and sexual behavior are of crucial importance in the biological and social sciences. Therefore, homosexual behavior presents a major challenge for those who hold that Darwinism is the great general theory to be applied with equal success in biology as well in social sciences. The same-sex activity can be found among animals of all kinds. However, based on the available literature and data, it is more likely that what looks like homosexual behavior may be more correctly classified as infantile play, poor discrimination or dominance-submission behavior.

Sex differences in nonhuman primate behavioral development.
Sex differences in behavior and developmental trajectories in human children are of great interest to researchers in a variety of fields, and a persistent topic of discussion and debate is the relative contribution of biological vs. social influences to such differences. Given the potentially large effects of cultural and social influences on human child development, nonhuman primates are impor...
متن کاملApplication of the genome editing tool CRISPR/Cas9 in non-human primates.
In the past three years, RNA-guided Cas9 nuclease from the microbial clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) adaptive immune system has been used to facilitate efficient genome editing in many model and non-model animals. However, its application in nonhuman primates is still at the early stage, though in view of the similarities in anatomy, physiology, behavior and g...
متن کاملNonhuman primate models of focal cerebral ischemia
Rodents have been widely used in the production of cerebral ischemia models. However, successful therapies have been proven on experimental rodent stroke model, and they have often failed to be effective when tested clinically. Therefore, nonhuman primates were recommended as the ideal alternatives, owing to their similarities with the human cerebrovascular system, brain metabolism, grey to whi...
متن کاملBehavioural, hormonal and neurobiological mechanisms of aggressive behaviour in human and nonhuman primates.
Aggression is a key component for social behaviour and can have an adaptive value or deleterious consequences. Here, we review the role of sex-related differences in aggressive behaviour in both human and nonhuman primates. First, we address aggression in primates, which varies deeply between species, both in intensity and in display, ranging from animals that are very aggressive, such as chimp...
متن کاملA Preliminary Review of Neotropical Primates in the Subsistence and Symbolism of Indigenous Lowland South American Peoples
This article provides a review of selected literature of nonhuman primates in the subsistence and symbolism of indigenous lowland South American groups. While few works have focused specifically on the relationship between human and nonhuman primates in Amazonia and the surrounding areas, a number of ethnographic works do incorporate information about the roles of monkeys in varied groups. The ...
