چکیده

In modern multimedia applications, scalability is a key functionality that allows transmission and representation of contents in a wide variety of networks and terminals. In order to obtain full advantage of scalability features, techniques for detailed description and transformation of multimedia contents are needed. In this paper, the Bitstream Syntax Description Language is used for describing the structure of an MPEG-4 wavelet-coded texture. An XML-based bitstream description transformation is then applied for selecting some texture regions at an appropriate quality, effectively scaling down the processing and bandwidth requirements for viewdependent texture transmission. Appropriately applying this technique to 3D streaming guarantees Quality-ofService, i.e. it certifies the best quality at limited network/processing resources.

A performance evaluation of MPEG-21 BSDL in the context of H.264/AVC

H.264/AVC is a new specification for digital video coding that aims at a deployment in a lot of multimedia applications, such as video conferencing, digital television broadcasting, and internet streaming. This is for instance reflected by the design goals of the standard, which are about the provision of an efficient compression scheme and a network-friendly representation of the compressed da...

An Efficient Video Transcoding Algorithm Between H.263 and MPEG-4 for Inter-Network Communications

Video transcoding comprises the necessary operations for the conversion of a compressed video stream from one syntax to another one for inter-network communications, without the need of any further decoding and re-encoding process. The two most recent and popular video coders are H.263 and MPEG-4. As well as some similarities, there are a number of differences between MPEG-4 and the H.263 bitst...

Exploitation of Interactive Region of Interest Scalability in Scalable Video Coding by Using an XML-driven Adaptation Framework

Interactive Region Of Interest (IROI) scalability is one of the requirements of the Scalable Video Coding extension of H.264/AVC (SVC). IROI can be used in applications in which the most interesting part of the video pane (in particular, the ROI) cannot be defined during the encoding phase. Therefore, the coded bitstreams have to be created in such a manner that the ROI can be selected on-the-f...

Motion and shape signatures for object-based indexing of MPEG-4 compressed video

The emerging MPEG-4 standard enables direct access to individual objects in the video stream, along with boundary/shape, texture, and motion information about each object. This paper proposes an object-based video indexing method that is directly applicable to the MPEG-4 compressed video bitstreams. The method aims to provide object-based content-interactivity; thus, de nes the audio-visual obj...

A syntactic framework for bitstream-level representation of audio-visual objects

We present the design of a novel syntactic and semantic framework to describe the bitstream-level representation of audio-visual information objects. This framework is important for emerging techniques in video compression, and is currently part of the MPEG-4 System Description Language Working Draft. The design is based on a principle of orthogonality between parsing and processing, i.e., sepa...
