چکیده

The swelling and shrinking behaviors of a series of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPA) hydrogels are studied in aqueous solutions of sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS). Between 0 and 3 mol % 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid sodium salt (AMPS) is used as an ionic comonomer in the hydrogel synthesis. It is shown that the collapsed PNIPA gels in water at 52°C start to swell above a critical SDBS concentration in the external solution. This critical concentration decreases as the ionic group content of PNIPA gel increases. A comparison of the swelling and shrinking experiments in SDBS solutions indicates strong hysteresis behavior of PNIPA gels. A more diluted solution is required to make a swollen gel start to reshrink than to cause gel swelling. The results show strong attractive forces between the isopropyl groups of the PNIPA network and the DB groups of SDBS molecules. © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 83: 1228–1232, 2002

Properties and applications of photoresponsive polymers

Several proposals to construct artificial photoresponsive polymer systems have been described. chromophores in the backbone reversibly changed the conformation by ultraviolet light irradiation(410 > > 350 nm), which causes the trans to cis isomerization of the chromophores. Aqueous solutions of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) with pendant azobenzene chromophores showed a photostimulated phase separ...

A Macroscopic Helix Formation Induced by the Shrinking of a Cylindrical Polymeric Hydrogel

Since the work of Tanaka et al.,1, 2 volume phase transitions of polymeric hydrogels has been a topic intensively studied. Pattern formation in a hydrogel associated with this transition is also of interest,3–8 since studies on the underlying pattern formation may elucidate mechanical properties of gels and pattern evolutions in some biological systems. Quasi-hexagonal patterns were found in sw...

Collapse and Swelling of Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide- co-sodium acrylate) Copolymer Brushes Grafted on a Flat SiO2 Surface

Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-sodium acrylate) copolymer brushes grafted on SiO2-coated quartz crystal surface were prepared with a surface-immobilized initiator. The collapse and swelling of the thermally sensitive copolymer brushes in water were studied with quartz crystal microbalance in situ. The frequency and dissipation changes with the temperature increasing in the range 20–38 8C indicat...

Bulk modulus of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) microgels through the swelling transition.

We report measurements of the bulk modulus of individual poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) microgels along their swelling transition. The modulus is determined by measuring the volume deformation of the microgel as a function of osmotic pressure using dextran solutions. We find that the modulus softens through the transition, displaying a nonmonotonous behavior with temperature. This feature is corre...
