He was born preterm at 32 weeks with birth weight of 1750 g. There was a few days’ history of neonatal intensive care unit stay after birth, with no notable systemic complications. Fundus examination using a RetCam revealed an aplastic disc with absence of retina and retinal vasculature, and prominence of choroidal vasculature (figure 2). The right eye was normal. A paediatric work up revealed no other systemic abnormality. A complete immunoassay by TORCH test revealed raised titres of cytomegalovirus (CMV) IgG at 145.10 IU/mL (positive >30 IU/mL), though

Bilateral aplasia of the optic nerve in a cat.
Congenital absence of the optic nerve in man is a very rare anomaly (Duke-Elder, I963, I964). In true cases the optic disc, optic nerve fibres, and central retinal blood vessels are absent on ophthalmoscopic examination. Hypoplasia of the optic nerve, which is also rare, occurs when some or all of the nerve fibres fail to develop and reach the disc. The condition may be unilateral or bilateral,...

In one of these cases, the fellow eye had an associated persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous (PHPV). The third patient had bilateral ONA with multiple intracranial anomalies. Previous reports are reviewed and reported findings are s...

We report a 6-month-old boy who presented with unilateral leukocoria, retinal detachment, and a retrolental mass in a microphthalmic eye based on retinal dysplasia with concurrent optic nerve aplasia. Dysplastic retinal tissue, a rare congenital defect, may create a clinical and radiologic picture of an intraocular mass closely resembling tumor tissue. MR imaging findings with histopathologic c...

Cochlear nerve (CN) aplasia refers to the absence of a visible CN on oblique sagittal magnetic resonance images of the lateral aspect of the inner auditory canal (IAC). Magnetic resonance (MR) is the preferred technique in patients with sensorineural hearing loss and/or vertigo; however, computed tomography (CT) is used to evaluate the IAC or facial nerve canal. Three types of aplasia or hypopl...

Congenital aplasia and hypoplasia of the optic nerves are rarely seen in human beings4 and an imak6 Similar conditions occur infrequently in but no detailed description of the condition has been given, except for the Bmn-wys strain of rat. Bmn-wys rats are animal models of inherited retinal degeneration; aplasia or hypoplasia of the optic nerve occurs in association with microphthalmosI0 in the...
