چکیده

Inventory control with unknown demand distribution is considered, with emphasis placed on the case involving discrete nonperishable items. We focus on an adaptive policy which in every period uses, as much as possible, the optimal newsvendor ordering quantity for the empirical distribution learned up to that period. The policy is assessed using the regret criterion, which measures the price paid for ambiguity on demand distribution over T periods. When there are guarantees on the latter’s separation from the critical newsvendor parameter β = b/(h+b), a constant upper bound on regret can be found. Without any prior information on the demand distribution, we show that the regret does not grow faster than the rate T 1/2+ for any > 0. In view of a known lower bound, this is almost the best one could hope for. Simulation studies involving this along with other policies are also conducted.

Dynamic Inventory and Price Controls Involving Unknown Demand on Discrete Nonperishable Items

We study adaptive policies that handle dynamic inventory and price controls while the random demand for discrete nonperishable items is unknown. Pure inventory control is achieved by targeting newsvendor ordering quantities that correspond to empirical demand distributions learned over time. On the basis of it we conduct the more complex joint inventory-price control, whereupon demand-affecting...

Newsvendor characterizations for one-warehouse multi-retailer inventory systems with discrete demand under the balance assumption

This paper considers a one-warehouse multi-retailer inventory system that faces discrete stochastic demand of the customers. Under the so-called balance assumption (also known as the allocation assumption), base stock policies are optimal. Our main contribution is to show that the optimal base stock levels satisfy newsvendor characterizations, which are in terms of inequalities, and to extend t...

Inventory Model for Deteriorating Items Involving Fuzzy with Shortages and Exponential Demand

This paper considers the fuzzy inventory model for deteriorating items for power demand under fully backlogged conditions. We define various factors which are affecting the inventory cost by using the shortage costs. An intention of this paper is to study the inventory modelling through fuzzy environment. Inventory parameters, such as holding cost, shortage cost, purchasing cost and deteriorati...

The Censored Newsvendor and the Optimal Acquisition of Information

This paper investigates the e ect of demand censoring on the optimal policy in newsvendor inventory models with general parametric demand distributions and unknown parameter values. We show that the newsvendor problem with observable lost sales reduces to a sequence of single-period problems while the newsvendor problem with unobservable lost sales requires a dynamic analysis. Using a Bayesian ...

Confidence-based optimisation for the newsvendor problem under binomial, Poisson and exponential demand

We introduce a novel strategy to address the issue of demand estimation in single-item single-period stochastic inventory optimisation problems. Our strategy analytically combines confidence interval analysis and inventory optimisation. We assume that the decision maker is given a set of past demand samples and we employ confidence interval analysis in order to identify a range of candidate ord...
