چکیده

This article reviews the study of tilt illusions by focusing on new illusions or new demonstrations reported by Japanese researchers after the review of Oyama (1960). Steady progress was observed in a variety of illusions. In particular, the development of the study of the Café Wall illusion and its related illusions during the past decade was remarkable. The study of the spiral illusion has also progressed dramatically.

Rocking or Rolling – Perception of Ambiguous Motion after Returning from Space

The central nervous system must resolve the ambiguity of inertial motion sensory cues in order to derive an accurate representation of spatial orientation. Adaptive changes during spaceflight in how the brain integrates vestibular cues with other sensory information can lead to impaired movement coordination, vertigo, spatial disorientation, and perceptual illusions after return to Earth. The p...

Bioplausible Multiscale Filtering in Retinal to Cortical Processing as a Model of Computer Vision

Visual illusions emerge as an attractive field of research with the discovery over the last century of a variety of deep and mysterious mechanisms of visual information processing in the human visual system. Among many classes of visual illusion relating to shape, brightness, colour and motion, “geometrical illusions” are essentially based on the misperception of orientation, size, and position...

Orientation processing mechanisms revealed by the plaid tilt illusion

The tilt after-effect (TAE) and tilt illusion (TI) have revealed a great deal about the nature of orientation coding of 1-dimensional (1D) lines and gratings. Comparatively little research however has addressed the mechanisms responsible for encoding the orientation of 2-dimensional (2D) plaid stimuli. A multi-stage model of edge detection has recently been proposed [Georgeson, M. A. (1998) Ima...

2-D tilt and 3-D slant illusions in perception and action tasks.

There is now a well established dissociation between perception and action based primarily on neuropsychological evidence [Milner and Goodale, 1995 The Visual Brain in Action (Oxford: Oxford University Press)]. Although equivocal, an important source of evidence from normal observers is that 'perceptual illusions' may affect the systems differently. We investigated the relative effects of 2-D t...

The tilt illusion: Phenomenology and functional implications

The perceived orientation of a line or grating is affected by the orientation structure of the surrounding image: the tilt illusion. Here, I offer a selective review of the literature on the tilt illusion, focusing on functional aspects. The review explores the merits of mechanistic accounts of the tilt illusion based upon sensory gain control in which neuronal responses are normalized by the p...
