Representing Digital Assets for Long-Term Preservation using MPEG-21 DID
نویسندگان
چکیده
Various efforts aimed at representing digital assets have emerged from several communities over the last years, including the Metadata Encoding and Transmission Standard (METS), the IMS Content Packaging (IMS-CP) XML Binding and the XML Formatted Data Units (XFDU). The MPEG-21 Digital Item Declaration (MPEG-21 DID) is another approach that can be used for the representation of digital assets in XML. This paper will explore the potential of the MPEG-21 DID in a Digital Preservation context, by looking at the core building blocks of the OAIS Information Model and the way in which they map to the MPEG-21 DID abstract model and the MPEG-21 DIDL XML syntax.

Using MPEG-21 DIP and NISO OpenURL for the Dynamic Dissemination of Complex Digital Objects in the Los Alamos National Laboratory Digital Library
This paper focuses on the use of NISO OpenURL and MPEG-21 Digital Item Processing (DIP) to disseminate complex objects and their contained assets, in a repository architecture designed for the Research Library of the Los Alamos National Laboratory. In the architecture, the MPEG-21 Digital Item Declaration Language (DIDL) is used as the XML-based format to represent complex digital objects. Thro...

This paper explores the purpose and development of best practice guidelines for the use of preservation metadata as detailed in the PREMIS Data Dictionary for Preservation Metadata within documents conforming to the Metadata Encoding and Transmission Standard (METS). METS is an XML schema that provides a container format integrating various forms of metadata with digital objects or links to dig...
متن کاملA Standards-based Solution for the Accurate Transfer of Digital Assets
This article describes results of a collaboration between the Research Library of the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) and the American Physical Society (APS) aimed at designing and implementing a robust solution for the recurrent transfer of digital assets from the APS collection to LANL. In this solution, various recent standards are combined to obtain an asset transfer framework that sh...

Taking its cue from the increasing amount of digital content deposited into institutional and subject repositories as well as the open question of repositories' role in long-term preservation, this study presents case studies of three German institutional and subject repositories all of which are in a different stage of establishing a (cooperative) framework for the long-term preservation of th...
متن کاملPreservation DataStores in the Cloud (PDS Cloud): Long Term Digital Preservation in the Cloud
The emergence of the cloud and advanced object-based storage services provides opportunities to support novel models for long term preservation of digital assets. Among the benefits of this approach is leveraging the cloud’s inherent scalability and redundancy to dynamically adapt to evolving needs of digital preservation. Preservation DataStores in the Cloud (PDS Cloud) is an OAIS-based preser...
