چکیده

Background: Incisional hernia is a hernia that protrudes through a defect in a previous abdominal wound, and is one of the complications after abdominal surgery. Many risk factors seem to be associated with its development, and there are different treatment modalities from conservative management to operative repair whether open or laparoscopic. Objective: To assess the relation between the type of surgical abdominal incision, and the occurrence of incisional hernia. Patients and Methods: A prospective study of 70 patients (58 cases: female, and 12 cases: male) diagnosed as having abdominal incisional hernia, admitted to the Surgical Department of Sulaimaniyah Teaching Hospital during the period from 1 May 2011 to 30 November 2012. History was taken and physical examination was done for all the patients. Modes of repairs for incisional hernia have been reported. Results: Transverse incisions (including Pfannenstiel) were more prone for incisional hernia about 30 cases (42.86%) whereas vertical incisions developed in 25 cases (35.71%) and only 11 cases (15.71%) were oblique incisions. Conclusion: We found that transverse incisions and elective cases were more prone for incisional hernia. Obesity and wound infection also play an important role in the development of incisional hernia. Now mesh repair is the modality of choice which is used frequently in our cases which was 68.57% of all incisional hernia cases.

Laparoscopic Incisional Hernia Repair

An incisional hernia (Fig 1.) is defined as any abdominal wall gap with or without a bulge in the area of a postoperative scar perceptible or palpable by clinical examination or imaging [1]. Incisional hernia is a common long-term complication following abdominal surgery and is estimated to occur in 11-23% [2, 3]. Retrospective review of risk factors for surgical wound dehiscence and incisional hernia

BACKGROUND Several factors and patient characteristics influence the risk of surgical wound dehiscence and incisional hernia after midline laparotomy. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether a specified, or not specified, suture quota in the operative report affects the incidence of surgical wound complications and to describe the previously known risk factors for these complicatio...

Risk Factors for Incisional Hernia and Parastomal Hernia after Colorectal Surgery

Morbid obesity is another important risk factor for the development of an incisional hernia and a parastomal hernia [9, 10]. Schreinemacher et al. [9] reported that hernias were more prevalent in patients with morbid obesity (body mass index of 30 and higher) and in patients with a temporary stoma wound (25.8% vs. 59.1%). De Raet et al. [10] reported that a waist circumference in excess of 100 ...

Subxiphoid Incisional Hernia Development after Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting

BACKGROUND Median sternotomy can weaken the upper abdominal wall and result in subxiphoid incisional hernia. We evaluated risk factors associated with the development of subxiphoid incisional hernias after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). MATERIALS AND METHODS Of 1,656 isolated CABGs performed between January 2001 and July 2010, 1,599 patients who were completely followed up were analy...
