چکیده

Contemporary imaging air Cherenkov telescopes (IACT) for ground-based very high energy (VHE) gamma ray astronomy have prime focus optical design. Typically these telescopes have a (2−4)◦ wide field of view (FoV). They use f/0.7−f/1.2 optics and provide (3−10) ′ resolution in the FoV. Generally, a well designed telescope that includes more than one optical element will offer some advantages not available in prime focus designs, such as a wider FoV, a more compact size, a higher and more homogeneous resolution and a lower degree of isochronous distortion of light rays focused onto the focal plane. Also, they allow monitoring the gamma ray activity in a sizeable portion of the sky in a single observation. This would allow one to perform a sensitive all-sky survey in a relative short time. We present an f/0.8 15◦ wide FoV telescope design, which provides a high and near uniform resolution and low isochronous distortion across the entire FoV.

Gaw (gamma Air Watch): a Novel Imaging Cherenkov Telescope

GAW (Gamma Air Watch) is a new imaging Cherenkov telescope designed for observation of very high-energy gamma-ray sources. GAW will be equipped with a 3 meter diameter Fresnel lens as light collector and with an array of 300 multi-anode photomultipliers at the focal plane. The pixel size will be 4 arcmin wide for a total field of view of 10.5 degrees. Whith respect to the planned imaging Cheren...

Wide-field prime-focus Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes: A systematic study

By means of third-order optical theory as well as ray-tracing simulations we have investigated the feasibility of wide-field imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes with a reflective prime-focus design. For a range of desired optical resolutions, we have determined the largest available field-of-view of single-piece spherical, singlepiece parabolic, tessellated spherical, tessellated parabolic...

Limits to the energy resolution of a single Air Cherenkov Telescope at low energies

The photon density on the ground is a fundamental quantity in all experiments based on Cherenkov light measurements, e.g. in the Imaging Air Cherenkov Telescopes (IACT). IACT’s are commonly and successfully used in order to search and study Very High Energy (VHE) γ-ray sources. Difficulties with separating primary photons from primary hadrons (mostly protons) in Cherenkov experiments become lar...

A New Analysis Method for Reconstructing the Arrival Direction of TeV Gamma-rays Using a Single Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope

We present a method of atmospheric Cherenkov imaging which reconstructs the unique arrival direction of TeV gamma rays using a single telescope. The method is derived empirically and utilizes several features of gamma-ray induced air showers which determine, to a precision of 0.12◦, the arrival direction of photons, on an eventby-event basis. Data from the Whipple Observatory’s 10 m gamma-ray t...
