چکیده

Abstract. A new, meter-wave radio telescope has been built in the North-East of Mauritius, an island in the Indian ocean, at a latitude of −20.14. The Mauritius Radio Telescope (MRT) is a Fourier Synthesis T-shaped array, consisting of a 2048 m long East-West arm and a 880 m long South arm. In the EastWest arm 1024 fixed helices are arranged in 32 groups and in the South arm 16 trolleys, with four helices on each, which move on a rail are used. A 512 channel digital complex correlation receiver is used to measure the visibility function. At least 60 days of observing are required for obtaining the visibilities up to 880 m spacing. The Fourier transform of the calibrated visibilities produces a map of the area of the sky under observation with a synthesized beam width 4× 4.6 sec(δ+20.14) at 151.5 MHz. The primary objective of the telescope is to produce a sky survey in the declination range −70 to −10 with a point source sensitivity of about 200 mJy (3σ level). This will be the southern sky equivalent of the Cambridge 6C survey. In this paper we describe the telescope, discuss the array design and the calibration techniques used, and present a map made using the telescope.

Deep low-frequency observations with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope: a search for relic radio emission

We present deep multifrequency observations using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope at 153, 244, 610 and 1260 MHz of a field centered on J0916+6348, to search for evidence of fossil radio lobes which could be due to an earlier cycle of episodic activity of the parent galaxy, as well as halos and relics in clusters of galaxies. We do not find any unambiguous evidence of episodic activity in a ...

A new search for distant radio galaxies in the southern hemisphere – I. Sample definition and radio properties

This paper introduces a new program to find high-redshift radio galaxies in the southern hemisphere through ultra-steep spectrum (USS) selection. We define a sample of 234 USS radio sources with spectral indices α 408 ≤ −1.0 (Sν ∝ ν α) and flux densities S408 ≥ 200 mJy in a region of 0.35 sr, chosen by cross-correlating the revised 408 MHz Molonglo Reference Catalogue, the 843 MHz Sydney Univer...

A new search for distant radio galaxies in the Southern hemisphere – III . Optical spectroscopy and analysis of the MRCR – SUMSS sample ⋆

We have compiled a sample of 234 ultra-steep-spectrum(USS)-selected radio sources in order to find high-redshift radio galaxies (HzRGs). The sample is in the southern sky at −40 < δ < −30 which is the overlap region of the 408-MHz Revised Molonglo Reference Catalogue, 843-MHz Sydney University Molonglo Sky Survey (the MRCR–SUMSS sample) and the 1400-MHz NRAO VLA Sky Survey. This is the third in...

A Complete Sample of Megaparsec-size Double Radio Sources from Sumss

We present a complete sample of megaparsec-size double radio sources compiled from the Sydney University Molonglo Sky Survey (SUMSS). Almost complete redshift information has been obtained for the sample. The sample has the following defining criteria: Galactic latitude |b| > 12. 5, declination δ < −50 and angular size > 5. All the sources have projected linear size larger than 0.7 Mpc (assumin...

The C-Band All-Sky Survey (C-BASS): design and implementation of the northern receiver

The C-Band All-Sky Survey is a project to map the full sky in total intensity and linear polarization at 5 GHz. The northern component of the survey uses a broad-band singlefrequency analogue receiver fitted to a 6.1-m telescope at the Owens Valley Radio Observatory in California, USA. The receiver architecture combines a continuous-comparison radiometer and a correlation polarimeter in a singl...
