چکیده
The author is a doctoral student, working under the direction of Prof. Chris Cheeseman in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department of Imperial College, London. The main subject of his thesis is the transformation of waste-to-energy (WTE) bottom ash to higher value applications. A second subject is the critical analysis of research and development efforts in Europe to advance beneficial uses of WTE ash. As part of this second part of his research, the author participated at the International Solid and Waste Association (ISWA) Working Group in Energy Recovery (WGER) meeting held in Bern, Switzerland on 25 and 26 October, 2012; and visited KEZO Himwil facility in Zurich, Switzerland as part of the ISWA meeting and Inascho facility in Rotterdam, Netherlands with Dr. Ralf Koralewska of Martin GmbH, during the period of October 26, 2012 and December 5, 2012 accordingly. This report summarizes the information received by the author during the above meetings and visits.

Fly Ash Characteristics From Waste-to-Energy Facilities and Processes For Ash Stabilization
Despite increased efforts to prevent, reduce, reuse and recycle, the appropriate management of municipal solid waste (MSW) remains a major environmental issue. Currently, Waste-to-Energy (WTE) facilities produce clean renewable energy through the combustion of municipal solid waste in specially designed power plants equipped with the most state-of-the-art pollution control equipment. Neverthele...

A 2007 WTERT survey (1) showed that the global waste-to-energy capacity (WTE) increased in the period 2001-2007 by about 4 million metric tons per annum. By far, the principal technology used globally for energy recovery from municipal solid wastes is combustion of “as received” MSW on moving grates (“mass burn” or stocker technology). The three dominant grate technologies, by Martin, Von Roll,...
متن کاملEnvironmental Characterization of Ash from the Combustion of Wood and Tires for Beneficial Use in Florida
Non-hazardous industrial solid wastes are frequently proposed for beneficial use rather than being disposed in MSW landfills. An example of such an industrial waste is waste-to-energy (WTE) ash. Proposed beneficial use projects for WTE ash often involve some form of land application. Prior to the land application of any solid waste, the possible risk to human health and the environment should b...
متن کاملCombined Heat and Power from Municipal Solid Waste: Current Status and Issues in South Korea
Municipal solid waste (MSW) is an important energy resource for combined heat and power (CHP) production. This study summarized an overview of CHP by MSW to energy (WtE) plants in South Korea and discussed the issues related to energy efficiency improvement. Given the dominant housing culture of apartment living in South Korea, the primary energy output of WtE plants has been for district heati...
متن کاملCCA-treated wood disposed in landfills and life-cycle trade-offs with waste-to-energy and MSW landfill disposal.
Chromated copper arsenate (CCA)-treated wood is a preservative treated wood construction product that grew in use in the 1970s for both residential and industrial applications. Although some countries have banned the use of the product for some applications, others have not, and the product continues to enter the waste stream from construction, demolition and remodeling projects. CCA-treated wo...
