چکیده

[1] We investigate the relationship between solar irradiance and cosmogenic isotope variations by simulating with a flux transport model the effect of solar activity on the Sun’s total and open magnetic flux. As the total amount of magnetic flux deposited in successive cycles increases, the polar fields build up, producing a secular increase in the open flux that controls the interplanetary magnetic field which modulates the cosmic ray flux that produces cosmogenic isotopes. Nonaxisymmetric fields at lower latitudes decay on time scales of less than a year; as a result the total magnetic flux at the solar surface, which controls the Sun’s irradiance, lacks an upward trend during cycle minima. This suggests that secular increases in cosmogenic and geomagnetic proxies of solar activity may not necessarily imply equivalent secular trends in solar irradiance. Questions therefore arise about the interpretation of Sun-climate relationships, which typically assume that the proxies imply radiative forcing.

Modeling the Sun’s Magnetic Field and Irradiance since 1713

We use a flux transport model to simulate the evolution of the Sun’s total and open magnetic flux over the last 26 solar cycles (1713–1996). Polar field reversals are maintained by varying the meridional flow speed between 11 and 20 m s , with the poleward-directed surface flow being slower during low-amplitude cycles. If the strengths of the active regions are fixed but their numbers are taken...

Evolution of the Solar Magnetic Flux on time scales of years to millenia

Aims. We improve the description of the evolution of the Sun’s open and total magnetic flux on time scales of years to millenia. Methods. In the model employed here the evolution of the solar total and open magnetic flux is computed from the flux emerging at the solar surface in the form of bipolar magnetic features, which is related to the sunspot number cycle parameters and can be estimated f...

Modeling the Sun’s Large-scale Magnetic Field during the Maunder Minimum

We use a flux transport model to simulate the evolution of the Sun’s magnetic dipole moment, polar fields, and open flux under Maunder minimum conditions. Even when the rate of active region emergence is taken to be a factor of 30 smaller than in recent solar cycles, regular polarity oscillations of the axial dipole and polar fields can be maintained if the speed of the poleward surface flow is...

Turbulent Pumping of Magnetic Flux Reduces Solar Cycle Memory and Thus Impacts Predictability of the Sun’s Activity

Prediction of the Sun’s magnetic activity is important because of its effect on space environment and climate. However, recent efforts to predict the amplitude of the solar cycle have resulted in diverging forecasts with no consensus. Yeates et al. (2008) have shown that the dynamical memory of the solar dynamo mechanism governs predictability and this memory is different for advectionand diffu...

How is open solar magnetic flux lost over the solar cycle?

[1] The Sun’s open magnetic field, magnetic flux dragged out into the heliosphere by the solar wind, varies by approximately a factor of 2 over the solar cycle. We consider the evolution of open solar flux in terms of a source and loss term. Open solar flux creation is likely to proceed at a rate dependent on the rate of photospheric flux emergence, which can be roughly parameterized by sunspot...
