چکیده

The clinical and operative findings are reviewed in 40patients with hemifadaJ spasm. Vascular cross-compression of the fadaJ nerve adjacent to the brain stem was noted in 39 patients. In 38 the abnormality was usually by an arterial loop. In one patient. osseus contact was discovered and drilled away. Mortality was zero and. morbidity was minimal. Complete cure of spasm was achieved in 36 cases (90%)and a further 2 patients improved.

HEMIFACIAL SPASM: A RERORT OF 100 CASES TREATED BY MICROVASCULAR DECOMPRESSION

100 patients with hemifacial spasm treated by microvascular decompression are presented. There were 60 females and 40 males. Their ages ranged from 29 to 75 years with a median age of 54 years, and the left side was involved predominantly. The common focal signs were facial nerve palsy in 41 cases, diminished hearing in 14 cases, trigeminal neuralgia in 11 cases, and homolateral trigeminal...

Efficacy of the Disappearance of Lateral Spread Response before and after Microvascular Decompression for Predicting the Long-Term Results of Hemifacial Spasm Over Two Years

OBJECTIVE The purpose of this large prospective study is to assess the association between the disappearance of the lateral spread response (LSR) before and after microvascular decompression (MVD) and clinical long term results over two years following hemifacial spasm (HFS) treatment. METHODS Continuous intra-operative monitoring during MVD was performed in 244 consecutive patients with HFS....

MRI findings in patients with a history of failed prior microvascular decompression for hemifacial spasm: how to image and where to look.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE A minority of patients who undergo microvascular decompression for hemifacial spasm do not improve after the first operation. We sought to determine the most common locations of unaddressed neurovascular contact in patients with persistent or recurrent hemifacial spasm despite prior microvascular decompression. MATERIALS AND METHODS Eighteen patients with a history of a...

Microvascular decompression surgery for trigeminal neuralgia and hemifacial spasm: naunces of the technique based on experiences with 100 patients and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND Microvascular decompression (MVD) surgery for trigeminal neuralgia and hemifacial spasm offers a relatively low-risk opportunity to treat cranial nerve hyperactivity-compression syndromes, which are associated with severe, disabling facial pain and spasm. Although a number of publications have described the technique in detail, combining the technical nuances from different schools o...

Hemifacial spasm: a prospective long-term follow up of 83 cases treated by microvascular decompression at two neurosurgical centres in the United Kingdom.

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the use of microvascular decompression (MVD) for the treatment of hemifacial spasm (HFS). METHODS Eighty three patients with HFS who underwent MVD via a suboccipital craniectomy are presented. RESULTS Seventy two out of seventy eight patients available for follow up remained free of any spasms at a mean follow up period of eight years. Two patients continued to have mi...
