Modeling the Infrared Bow Shock at Δ Velorum: Implications for Studies of Debris Disks and Λ Boötis Stars
نویسنده
چکیده
We have discovered a bow shock shaped mid-infrared excess region in front of δ Velorum using 24 μm observations obtained with the Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer (MIPS). The excess has been classified as a debris disk from previous infrared observations. Although the bow shock morphology was only detected in the 24 μm observations, its excess was also resolved at 70 μm. We show that the stellar heating of an ambient interstellar medium (ISM) cloud can produce the measured flux. Since δ Velorum was classified as a debris disk star previously, our discovery may call into question the same classification of other stars. We model the interaction of the star and ISM, producing images that show the same geometry and surface brightness as is observed. The modeled ISM is ∼ 15 times overdense relative to the average Local Bubble value, which is surprising considering the close proximity (24 pc) of δ Velorum. The abundance anomalies of λ Boötis stars have been previously explained as arising from the same type of interaction of stars with the ISM. Low resolution optical spectra of δ Velorum show that it does not belong to this stellar class. The star therefore is an interesting testbed for the ISM accretion theory of the λ Boötis phenomenon. A Spitzer View of Protoplanetary Disks in the Velorum Cluster
We present new Spitzer Space Telescope observations of stars in the young ( 5 Myr) Velorum stellar cluster. Combining optical and 2MASS photometry, we have selected 579 stars as candidate members of the cluster. With the addition of the Spitzermid-infrared data, we have identified five debris disks aroundA-type stars and five to six debris disks around solar-type stars, indicating that the stro...

متن کاملDusty Debris Disks as Signposts of Planets: Implications for SIRTF
Submillimeter and near-infrared images of cool dusty debris disks and rings suggest the existence of unseen planets. At dusty but non-imaged stars, semi-major axes of associated planets can be estimated from the dust temperature. For some young stars these semi-major axes are greater than an arc second as seen from Earth. Such stars are excellent targets for sensitive near-infrared imaging sear...

متن کاملOn the Relationship Between Debris Disks and Planets
Dust in debris disks is generated by collisions among planetesimals. The existence of these planetesimals is a consequence of the planet formation process, but the relationship between debris disks and planets has not been clearly established. Here we analyze Spitzer/MIPS 24 and 70μm data for 150 planet-bearing stars, and compare the incidence of debris disks around these stars with a sample of...
