Self–organized criticality due to a separation of energy scales
نویسنده
چکیده
Certain systems with slow driving and avalanche–like dissipation events are naturally close to a critical point when the ratio of two energy scales is large. The first energy scale is the threshold above which an avalanche is triggered, the second scale is the threshold above which a site is affected by an avalanche. I present results of computer simulations, and a mean–field theory. PACS numbers: 05.40.+j, 05.70.Jk, 05.70.Ln.

The existence of true scale-invariance in slowly driven models of selforganized criticality without a conservation law, as forest-fires or earthquake automata, is scrutinized in this paper. By using three different levels of description (i) a simple mean field, (ii) a more detailed mean-field description in terms of a (self-organized) branching processes, and (iii) a full stochastic representat...
متن کاملPower laws and Self-Organized Criticality in Theory and Nature
Power laws and distributions with heavy tails are common features of many complex systems. Examples are the distribution of earthquake magnitudes, solar flare intensities and the sizes of neuronal avalanches. Previously, researchers surmised that a single general concept may act as an underlying generative mechanism, with the theory of self organized criticality being a weighty contender. The p...

Solar coronal heating is a complex problem due to the variety of scales and physical phenomena involved, and intricacy of “boundary conditions”. Lattice models and self-organized criticality provide means to model phenomenologically some of the physics involved over a wide range of scales, and reproduce certain statistical features of solar flares. Furthermore, these models offer a basis for th...
متن کاملBrany Liouville Inflation
We present a specific model for cosmological inflation driven by the Liouville field in a non-critical supersymmetric string framework, in which the departure from criticality is due to open strings stretched between two moving Type-II 5-branes. We use WMAP and other data on fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background to fix parameters of the model, such as the relative separation and veloc...
متن کاملSelf-organized criticality in spatial evolutionary game theory.
Self-organized criticality is an important framework for understanding the emergence of scale-free natural phenomena. Cellular automata provide simple interesting models in which to study self-organized criticality. We consider the dynamics of a new class of cellular automata which are constructed as natural spatial extensions of evolutionary game theory. This construction yields a discrete one...
