چکیده

Wireless local area networks are a promising solution to support advanced data services in mobile environments. The IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN standard is emerging as a mature technology to support delay sensitive network services. In order to support these services the standard has proposed the use of a polling scheme; however, existing polling schemes require high communication overheads or suffer from unfairness. In this paper, we propose a distributed fair queueing algorithm, “distributed deficit round robin”, which is compatible with the 802.11 medium access control rules. Software simulation of this scheme shows that it can manage a heterogeneous mix of delay sensitive traffic. Key Words— Round robin, Fair queueing, Medium access control, Polling, Scheduling, Wireless local area networks

Resolving Collisions in IEEE 802.11 by means of Contention Window Reservation Scheduling

The random backoff contention window algorithm implemented in the IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) provides a certain degree of collision mitigation. However, the issue of high collision rates within the IEEE 802.11 contention mode in a wireless local area network (WLAN) with high number of nodes is still not resolved. High packet collision rates result in throughput degradat...

Fair Queueing Scheduler for IEEE 802.11 Based Wireless Multimedia Networks

Wireless local area networks are a viable technology to support multimedia traffic One of the prominent wireless local area network standards is the IEEE 802.11 standard. In wireless multimedia networks, mobile stations will be capable of generating a heterogeneous traffic mix with varying bandwidth requirements. In this paper, we investigate in detail, a distributed fair queueing scheduler for...

A Nalysis of C Ontention B Ased M Ethod for Mac L Ayer in W Ireless N Etworks

Quality of Service (QoS) is the ability to guarantee a certain level of performance to a data flow ie., guaranteeing required bit rate, delay, etc. IEEE 802.11 a/b/g networks do not provide QoS differentiation among multimedia traffic. QoS provisioning is one of the essential features in IEEE 802.11e. It uses Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA) which is a contention-based channel access ...

Performance analysis of distributed resource reservation in IEEE 802.11e-based wireless networks

Guaranteeing quality of service is one of the most critical challenges in IEEE 802.11-based wireless networks. This paper proposes an analytical framework to evaluate hybrid MAC scheduling mechanisms with distributed resource reservation, that was proposed for the IEEE 802.11e enhanced distributed channel access protocol for guaranteeing quality of service. The hybrid MAC scheduling mechanisms ...

Enhancing the Power Saving Mode in IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordinator Function Using Traffic Scheduling

In IEEE 802.11 Power Saving (PS) mode specified for Independent Basic Service Set (IBSS), mobile stations announce their pending data packets within Announcement Traffic Indication Message (ATIM) window immediately after the reception of Time Synchronization Function (TSF) beacon. This paper proposed modifications to the PS mode by transmitting the TSF beacon at the end of each ATIM window. Upo...
