Ex post evidence on adoption of transgenic crops: US soybeans

چکیده

Transgenic crops offer a complex new technology that is not universally dominant over alternatives. Instead, adoption decisions are conditional on incentives associated with alternative technologies and local conditions. These characteristics imply that transgenic crops can be expected to be adopted on a wide scale in existing cultural areas, if incentives are appropriate. Further, considerable potential exists for transgenic crops to be adopted in new areas where they offer advantages over alternative crops such as weed control and other management practices.

Minimum distance requirements and liability: implications for co-existence

The co-existence of conventional and transgenic products in the food chain introduces new elements in the evaluation of the profitability of transgenic crops and, consequently, on the farmer’s adoption decision. In particular, one emerging problem farmers are facing in Europe is related to the legal liability of transgenic-crop cultivation. In Europe, a mixture of ex-ante regulations and ex-pos...

The Economic Impacts of Biotechnology-Based Technological Innovations

Global adoption of transgenic crops reached 67.7 million hectares in 2003 from 2.8 million in 1996. Delivery has occurred almost entirely through the private sector and adoption has been rapid in areas where the crops addressed serious production constraints and where farmers had access to the new technologies. Three countries (USA, Argentina and Canada), three crops (soybean, cotton and maize)...

Issues, impacts, and prospects of the first transgenic crops tolerant to a herbicide. The case of glyphosate-tolerant soybean in the USA

Until today, herbicide-tolerant (HT) transgenic crops have been the most widely used type of transgenic crops. In 2008, worldwide, 63% of all agricultural land devoted to transgenic crops involved HT transgenic ones, and the percentage was higher (85%) when the herbicide-tolerant trait was stacked with another. In addition, other HT crops are foreseen within the next five years if we are to bel...

Selectable Marker Gene Removal and Expression of Transgene by Inducible Promoter Containing FFDD Cis-Acting elements in Transgenic plants

Abstract Background: Selectable marker gene (SMG) systems are critical for generation of transgenic crops. Transgenic crop production Background: Selectable marker gene (SMG) systems are critical for generation of transgenic crops. Transgenic crop production without using SMG is not economically feasible. However, SMGs are non-essential once an intact transgenic plant has been established. Eli...
