چکیده
This comprehensive monograph on schistosomiasis presents in. detail the historical background of the disease, its epidemiology, biology, pathology, clinical features, and methods of diagnosis, treatment, and control. The commendable thoroughness and exhaustiveness of the volume reflect the gravity of the problem in Venezuela, where 80 per cent of the population is affected in some endemic zones. A series of excellent photomicrographs and mllustra-tions are incorporated in the text. An appended critical appraisal of this contribution , by Dr. Pedro Gonzales Rincones, help to clarify some controversial issues which otherwise might not be readfly apparent. M. TAGER.

Schistosomiasis mansoni in areas of low transmission: epidemiological characterization of Venezuelan foci.
Severe schistosomiasis is a rare event in Venezuela nowadays, after a successful national campaign by the Schistosomiasis Control Program. Unfortunately, this program has practically disappeared, and snail surveillance in field is not a priority, anymore. Thus, schistosomiasis has become a neglected disease in this country. However, surveys in different populations from the endemic area have sh...
متن کاملLow transmission areas of schistosomiasis in Venezuela: consequences on the diagnosis, treatment, and control.
Schistosomiasis low transmission areas as Venezuela, can be defined as those where the vector exists, the prevalence of active cases is under 25%, individuals with mild intensity of infection predominate and are mostly asymptomatic. These areas are the consequence of effective control programs, however, "silent" epidemiological places are difficult to trace, avoiding the opportune diagnosis and...
متن کاملMast Cells Kinetics during Experimental Schistosomiasis mansoni in Mice
Increased number of mast cells at the site of infection is widely regarded as important host defense against parasites. The kinetics of mucosal mast cells and connective tissue mast cells responses were studied in the intestines of 68 female CFLP mice infected with 100 Schistosoma mansoni cercariae. The number of mucosal mast cells and the connective tissue mast cells increased from week 3 and ...

To determine the safety and efficacy of 2 consecutive doses of triclabendazole (TCBZ) in the treatment of Schistosoma mansoni infection in human cases infected with both S. mansoni and Fasciola sp., we conducted a field survey involving 6314 individuals from 15 villages. The overall prevalence of schistosomiasis alone was 15.8%, of fascioliasis alone 2.2%, and of combined infection 0.7%. Treatm...
