In addition, we thank Dick Rappleye for his assistance and critical reading of early drafts of this report, Sameer Patil for his help in conducting the web-based survey, and Dan Atkins, on behalf of the Alliance for Community Technology, for bringing us together with the Requirements analysis for application service provision 2 Executive Summary This report summarizes data from 139 Michigan-based nonprofit organizations about their interest in application service provision (ASP), or supply and support of applications over the Internet. Many of the organizations were interested or very interested in the ASP concept (40%), and a third (33%) were interested or very interested in joining an ASP pilot project. Critical considerations for ASP adoption included cost savings, timely hardware and software support, and data security. Slow response to problems was the principal concern about ASP use. Finally, email, accounting software, and office software were indicated as the chief targets for ASP support. Overall, the survey data suggest enthusiasm for the ASP concept among responding organizations – but the response sample was heavily skewed toward larger organizations, making it difficult to generalize results to the broader population of Michigan-based nonprofit organizations.
