How Slowing Senescence Could Change Life Expectancy
نویسندگان
چکیده
Mortality decline has historically been a result of reductions in the level of mortality at all ages. The slope of mortality increase with age has been remarkably stable. A number of leading researchers on aging, however, suggest that the next revolution of longevity increase will be the result of slowing down the rate of aging. In this paper, we show mathematically how varying the pace of senescence influences life expectancy. We provide a formula that holds for any baseline hazard function. Our result is analogous to Keyfitz’s “entropy” relationship for changing the level of mortality. Interestingly, the influence of the shape of the baseline schedule on the effect of senescence changes is the complement of that found for level changes. We also provide a generalized formulation that mixes level and slope effects. GOLDSTEIN AND CASSIDY 3

How slowing senescence changes life expectancy
Mortality decline has historically been a result of reductions in the level of mortality at all ages. The slope of mortality increase with age has been remarkably stable. A number of leading researchers on aging, however, suggest that the next revolution of longevity increase will be the result of slowing down the rate of aging, lessening the rate at which mortality increases as we get older. متن کاملSubstantial health and economic returns from delayed aging may warrant a new focus for medical research.
Recent scientific advances suggest that slowing the aging process (senescence) is now a realistic goal. Yet most medical research remains focused on combating individual diseases. Using the Future Elderly Model--a microsimulation of the future health and spending of older Americans--we compared optimistic "disease specific" scenarios with a hypothetical "delayed aging" scenario in terms of the ...
متن کاملTelomere dynamics rather than age predict life expectancy in the wild.
Despite accumulating evidence from in vitro studies that cellular senescence is linked to telomere dynamics, how this relates to whole-organism senescence and longevity is poorly understood and controversial. Using data on telomere length in red blood cells and long-term survival from wild Alpine swifts of a range of ages, we report that the telomere length and the rate of telomere loss are pre...
متن کاملEffectiveness of Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy on Life Expectancy, Fear of Death and Glycemic Control in Diabetic Patients with Depression
Background and purpose: Depression is one of the most common psychiatric disorders in diabetic patients that could change the disease prognosis in addition to affecting the treatment path. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) on life expectancy, fear of death, and glycemic control in diabetic patients suffering from depression. M...

Background and Aim: Economic factors, including life insurance in financial sector may have a significant effect on health sector and consequently on the life expectancy of the society. The life insurance effects on health index indirectly through economic growth and directly through bringing mental relaxation and social welfare for the person applying for life insurance. The main purpose of ...
