چکیده

We show that the activity of cobalt for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) can be enhanced by confining it in the interlayer region of birnessite (layered manganese oxide). The cobalt intercalation was verified by employing state-of-the-art characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and electron microscopy. It is demonstrated that the Co/birnessite electrocatalyst can reach 10 mA cm−2 at an overpotential of 360 mV with near-unity Faradaic efficiency. This overpotential is lower than that which can be achieved by using a pure cobalt hydroxide electrocatalyst for the OER. Furthermore, the Co/birnessite catalyst shows no degradation after 1000 electrochemical cycles.

Regenerable Cu-intercalated MnO2 layered cathode for highly cyclable energy dense batteries

Manganese dioxide cathodes are inexpensive and have high theoretical capacity (based on two electrons) of 617 mAh g-1, making them attractive for low-cost, energy-dense batteries. They are used in non-rechargeable batteries with anodes like zinc. Only ∼10% of the theoretical capacity is currently accessible in rechargeable alkaline systems. Attempts to access the full capacity using additives h...

Exfoliation of layered double hydroxides for enhanced oxygen evolution catalysis.

The oxygen evolution reaction is a key reaction in water splitting. The common approach in the development of oxygen evolution catalysts is to search for catalytic materials with new and optimized chemical compositions and structures. Here we report an orthogonal approach to improve the activity of catalysts without alternating their compositions or structures. Specifically, liquid phase exfoli...

Formation of todorokite from “c-disordered” H+-birnessites: the roles of average manganese oxidation state and interlayer cations

BACKGROUND Todorokite, a 3 × 3 tectomanganate, is one of three main manganese oxide minerals in marine nodules and can be used as an active MnO6 octahedral molecular sieve. The formation of todorokite is closely associated with the poorly crystalline phyllomanganates in nature. However, the effect of the preparative parameters on the transformation of "c-disordered" H(+)-birnessites, analogue t...

Structural, magnetic and dielectric properties of pure and Dy-doped Co3O4 nanostructures for the electrochemical evolution of oxygen in alkaline media

In this study, spinel-type cobalt oxide (Co3O4) and Co3-xDyxO4 (x = 0.04 and 0.05 molar ratio) nanoparticles were synthesized via combustion method at 700 °C. Crystallite nature, phase purity and thermal analysis of the prepared compounds were investigated by PXRD, FT-IR and TGA techniques. Structural analyses were performed by the FullProf program employing profile matching with constant scale...

Beyond the volcano limitations in electrocatalysis--oxygen evolution reaction.

Oxygen evolution catalysis is restricted by the interdependence of adsorption energies of the reaction intermediates and the surface reactivity. The interdependence reduces the number of degrees of freedom available for catalyst optimization. Here it is demonstrated that this limitation can be removed by active site modification. This can be achieved on ruthenia by incorporation of Ni or Co int...
