چکیده

| It is well-known that MultiLevel Coding (MLC) andMultiStage Decoding (MSD) su ce to approach capacity if the rates at di erent levels are chosen appropriately. In most of the practical cases, however, the rate design rule for MSD doesn't leave any room for coding at higher levels of the MLC scheme, which is very important in fading environments. In this paper, the rate design rule for multilevel coding using iterative multistage decoding is investigated, and it is shown that using iterative MSD with updated a priori probabilities of the constellation points, a broader subregion of the capacity region of the MLC scheme can be achieved. Multilevel codes: Theoretical concepts and practical design rules

This paper deals with 2-ary transmission using multilevel coding (MLC) and multistage decoding (MSD). The known result that MLC and MSD suffice to approach capacity if the rates at each level are appropriately chosen is reviewed. Using multiuser information theory, it is shown that there is a large space of rate combinations such that MLC and full maximum-likelihood decoding (MLD) can approach ...

On Iterative Multistage Decoding of Multilevel Codes for Frequency Selective Channels

Combined channel coding and digital modulation (multilevel codes) yield power and bandwidth efficient digital transmission schemes. It is known that systems optimised for the Gaussian channel are not optimum for fading channels and vice versa [I]. We apply iterative multistage decoding of multilevel codes which leads to good prformance for both Gaussian and fading channels at bit error rates (B...

Soft decision decoding of linear block codes based on ordered statistics in multilevel signaling

| Soft decision decoding of linear block codes based on ordered statistics is discussed in the context of multilevel coding with multistage decoding. Analytical expressions on the ordered statistics and the associated bit error probability have been derived. The result shows tradeo s between error performance and decoding complexity in multilevel signaling including BPSK modulation formats as a...

Multilevel Codes and Multistage Decoding for Unequal Error Protection

| In this paper, multilevel coded modulation with multistage decoding and unequal error protection is discussed. Three types of unconventional partitionings for 8-PSK and 16(64)-QAM constellations with UEP capabilities are analyzed. Based on the tight upper/approximated bounds on bit error probability, it is shown that more degrees of freedom in the construction of multilevel coding and multist...

Performance Analysis of Multilevel Punctured Turbo Codes

In applications of wireless packet-oriented video and image communications, a special coding scheme, referred to as multilevel coding (MLC), exhibits both power and bandwidth efficiency by jointly optimizing channel coding and modulation. In particular, MLC is suitable for communications over a degraded broadcast channel due to its superposition structure. Moreover, the hierarchical channel cod...
