Operant controlled neural event: formal and systematic approach to electrical coding of behavior in brain.

Traditional studies of electrophysiological correlates of behavior contain inherent high variability resulting from the arbitrary choice of behaviors, brain locations, and wave parameters. The operant control of neural events is a formal and systematic approach to the study of prespecified parameters and components of brain activity as they encode behaviors. Two studies in which the electrical ...

Probability Matching via Deterministic Neural Networks

We propose a constructive neural-network model comprised of deterministic units which estimates and represents probability distributions from observable events — a phenomenon related to the concept of probability matching. We use a form of operant learning, where the underlying probabilities are learned from positive and negative reinforcements of the inputs. Our model is psychologically plausi...

A neural network model of memory and higher cognitive functions.

I first describe a neural network model of associative memory in a small region of the brain. The model depends, unconventionally, on disinhibition of inhibitory links between excitatory neurons rather than long-term potentiation (LTP) of excitatory projections. The model may be shown to have advantages over traditional neural network models both in terms of information storage capacity and bio...

Neural Operant Conditioning as a Core Mechanism of Brain-Machine Interface Control

The process of changing the neuronal activity of the brain to acquire rewards in a broad sense is essential for utilizing brain-machine interfaces (BMIs), which is essentially operant conditioning of neuronal activity. Currently, this is also known as neural biofeedback, and it is often referred to as neurofeedback when human brain activity is targeted. In this review, we first illustrate biofe...

A bottom up approach towards the acquisition and expression of sequential representations applied to a behaving real-world device: Distributed Adaptive Control III

Biological systems display a high degree of flexibility in problem solving. In this paper a model is presented, Distributed Adaptive Control III (DACIII), which is aimed at understanding these forms of behavior. DACIII is part of a larger modeling series directed at understanding how biological systems acquire, retain, and express knowledge of the world. This modeling series has its roots, on o...
