Phase Stability and Phase Transformations in Plutonium and Plutonium-Gallium Alloys
نویسنده
چکیده
The complexity of phase stability and transformations in plutonium alloys is reflected in the plutoniumgallium (Pu-Ga) phase diagram, which is perhaps the most complex of all binary systems. Although many investigations have explored phase equilibria, transformation systematics, and structure/property relations in the Pu-Ga system, many outstanding problems remain and new issues regularly appear. In this article, we describe recent dilatometry and calorimetry measurements on pure plutonium and plutonium-gallium alloys. We also present recent phase diagram modeling that attempts to unravel differences between the U.S. and Russian Pu-Ga phase diagrams. The ultimate goal of this work is to produce the first internally consistent database of thermophysical properties of this system so that a true equilibrium phase diagram can be produced and so that stability can be predicted over a range of conditions.

Using a Multi-disciplinary Approach, the First Electron Backscattered Kikuchi Patterns Were Captured for a Plutonium Alloy
Microstructural characterization of plutonium by electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) has been previously elusive primarily because of the extreme toxicity and surface oxidation rates associated with plutonium metal. In this work, initial electron backscattered diffraction pattern (EBSP) observations of a plutonium-gallium (Pu-Ga) alloy were made. Samples were prepared using standard metal...

An experimental technique has recently been developed to characterize reactive metals, including plutonium (Pu) and cerium, using electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). Microstructural characterization of Pu and its alloys by EBSD had been previously elusive primarily because of the extreme toxicity and rapid surface oxidation rate associated with Pu metal. The experimental technique, which i...

The δ phase of plutonium with the fcc structure exhibits an unusual negative thermal expansion (NTE) over its narrow temperature range of stability, 593-736 K. An accurate description of the anomalous high-temperature volume effect of plutonium goes beyond the current capability of electronic-structure calculations. We propose an atomistic scheme to model the thermodynamic properties of δ-Pu ba...

Aging effects in plutonium metal are of metallurgical and practical interest. The Dismantlement Program has provided a wide variety of plutonium samples from a large number of retired nuclear weapons , enabling the development of a comprehensive database of materials properties as a function of age. Data are providing a substantive statistical foundation for these properties as well. The primar...
