NTP Announces Bioassay Results

چکیده
-Peripheral-blood basophils were counted, in thick smears, in samples from patients with primary bronchial carcinoma, from patients in the same wards and from normal individuals. The median counts for patients with other chest conditions (15-5/4d) and bronchial-carcinoma patients free of tumour months to years after resection (16/1l) did not differ from those for normal individuals (19/1,u), but tumour-bearers showed higher counts (median 33/1z), 24/41 having counts above the highest count in normal individuals (29/1l): P<0.002). The highest values were in patients with squamous bronchial carcinoma, apparently reflecting spontaneous challenge of an anti-tumour immune response. In those tested at the time of diagnosis, higher values in both lymphocyte and basophil counts were related to surgical resectability.

Contamination is a frequent confounding factor in toxicology studies with anthraquinone and related compounds.
Anthraquinone (AQ) (9,10-anthracenedione) is an important compound in commerce. Many structurally related AQ derivatives are medicinal natural plant products. Examples include 1-hydroxyanthraquinone (1-OH-AQ) and 2-hydroxyanthraquinone (2-OH-AQ), which are also metabolites of AQ. Some commercial AQ is produced by the oxidation of anthracene (AQ-OX). In the recent past, the anthracene used was d...
متن کاملUse of a multistrain assay could improve the NTP carcinogenesis bioassay.
There are often large strain differences in the response of laboratory animals to toxic chemicals and carcinogens, with some strains being totally resistant to dose levels that cause acute toxicity and/or cancer in other strains. The current National Toxicology Program carcinogenesis bioassay (NTP-CB) uses only a single isogenic strain of mice and rats and may therefore miss some carcinogens. N...
متن کاملHormesis at the National Toxicology Program (NTP): Evidence of Hormetic Dose Responses in NTP Dose-Range Studies.
The National Toxicology Program (NTP) dose-ranging studies typically employ five dosages and a concurrent control and are conducted for 2- and 13-week exposure periods. Because five doses are employed it suggested the possibilities of the occurrence of sub-NOAEL doses in many of these bioassays and of evaluating the occurrence of hormesis within the NTP bioassay. As a result, 59 environmentally...
متن کاملDerivation of an Ingestion-Based Soil Remediation Criterion for CR6 Based on the NTP Chronic Bioassay Data for Sodium Dichromate Dihydrate
Although the carcinogenicity of hexavalent chromium (Cr+6, Cr(VI)) by inhalation has been known for a long time, there has been little evidence regarding the potential for the carcinogenicity and no ability to estimate cancer potency of Cr+6 by ingestion until recently. The release in 2008 of the National Toxicology Program’s (NTP) chronic bioassay of rats and mice exposed to Cr+6 in drinking w...
متن کاملThe preparation of anthraquinone used in the National Toxicology Program cancer bioassay was contaminated with the mutagen 9-nitroanthracene.
Commercial anthraquinone (AQ) (9,10-anthracenedione) is produced by at least three different production methods worldwide: oxidation of anthracene (AQ-OX), Friedel-Crafts technology (AQ-FC) and by Diels-Alder chemistry (AQ-DA), with the final product varying in color and purity. AQ-OX begins with anthracene produced from coal tar and different lots can contain various contaminants, particularly...
