The Chesapeake Bay Institute Technique for the Winkler Dissolved Oxygen Method
ثبت نشده
چکیده
A modified technique for the Winkler determination of dissolved oxygen has been used at the Chesapeake Bay Institute for several years. The modifications result in increased simplicity and speed and reduction in the errors due to manipulation. The unusual features of the technique are the elimination of the volumetric transfer of the final iodine solution and the reagent concentrations. The sources of errors in the various techniques for the Winkler method are discussed in detail by Carpenter (1965) and by Carritt ( 1964)) who also reports the results of an intercomparison experiment.

متن کاملAssessment of Nitrogen and Phosphorus Control Tradeoffs Using A Water Quality Model with A Response Surface Method
Excessive nutrient loads to the Chesapeake Bay cause violations of the new dissolved oxygen water quality standard established to protect the Bay’s living resources. Reducing nitrogen and phosphorus loads is necessary to achieve the dissolved oxygen standard. Based on a set of water quality model runs, we used a response surface method to establish a function of dissolved oxygen (DO) versus tot...
متن کاملDevelopment and evaluation of a spatially-explicit index of Chesapeake Bay health.
In an effort to better portray changing health conditions in Chesapeake Bay and support restoration efforts, a Bay Health Index (BHI) was developed to assess the ecological effects of nutrient and sediment loading on 15 regions of the estuary. Three water quality and three biological measures were combined to formulate the BHI. Water quality measures of chlorophyll-a, dissolved oxygen, and Secc...
متن کاملConowingo Reservoir Sedimentation and Chesapeake Bay: State of the Science.
The Conowingo Reservoir is situated on the Susquehanna River, immediately upstream of Chesapeake Bay, the largest estuary in the United States. Sedimentation in the reservoir provides an unintended benefit to the bay by preventing sediments, organic matter, and nutrients from entering the bay. The sediment storage capacity of the reservoir is nearly exhausted, however, and the resulting increas...
متن کاملModeling the Effect of Hypoxia on Macrobenthos Production in the Lower Rappahannock River, Chesapeake Bay, USA
Hypoxia in Chesapeake Bay has substantially increased in recent decades, with detrimental effects on macrobenthic production; the production of these fauna link energy transfer from primary consumers to epibenthic and demersal predators. As such, the development of accurate predictive models that determine the impact of hypoxia on macrobenthic production is important. A continuous-time, biomass...
