Ion orbit loss current in ASDEX Upgrade
نویسندگان
چکیده
The orbit loss current is calculated for the ASDEX Upgrade geometry using the 5D (3D in configuration space and 2D in velocity space) Monte Carlo code ASCOT. The balance between the obtained current and the analytical estimate of the return current shows an L–H transition for the normalized collision frequency ν∗i ≈ 1 as expected from analytic theory. The transition in ASDEX Upgrade, however, occurs at larger values of ν∗i.

Fast Ion Loss Diagnostic in ASDEX Upgrade
The confinement of fast particles is of crucial importance for next step fusion devices like ITER. Since fast ion losses might reduce the core heating and, in addition, cause untolerable first wall load, it is important to understand and possibly avoid them. Here, an integrated approach is presented for the analysis of neutral beam injection related fast ion losses in ASDEX Upgrade. It consists...
متن کاملNeoclassical radial current balance in tokamaks and transition to the H mode
Monte Carlo ion simulation based on neoclassical radial current balance in a divertor tokamak gives a stationary sheared E-->xB--> flow. The neoclassical radial electric field E(r) shows no bifurcation in contrast with earlier orbit loss models, but the shear in E(r) reaches values at which a transition to enhanced confinement has been observed. Also, MHD turbulence analysis shows that a smooth...
متن کاملFast-ion transport in the presence of magnetic reconnection induced by sawtooth oscillations in ASDEX Upgrade
The transport of beam-generated fast ions has been investigated experimentally at the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak in the presence of sawtooth crashes. After sawtooth crashes, phase space resolved fast-ion D-alpha (FIDA) measurements show a significant reduction of the central fast-ion density more than 50% together with an increase at larger radii. The corresponding loss of fast particles, detected b...
متن کاملImproved Collective Thomson Scattering measurements of fast ions at ASDEX Upgrade
Understanding the behaviour of the confined fast ions is important in both current and future fusion experiments. These ions play a key role in heating the plasma and will be crucial for achieving conditions for burning plasma in next-step fusion devices. Microwave-based Collective Thomson Scattering (CTS) is well suited for reactor conditions and offers such an opportunity by providing measure...
متن کاملGeneration of blobs and holes in the edge of the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak
The intermittent character of turbulent transport is investigated with Langmuir probes in the scrape-off layer (SOL) and across the separatrix of ASDEX Upgrade Ohmic discharges. Radial profiles of plasma parameters are in reasonable agreement with results from other diagnostics. The probability density functions of ion-saturation current fluctuations exhibit a parabolic relation between skewnes...
