چکیده

It has been suggested in the past that an AeffectiveB cloud fraction can be used to take into account cloud geometry effects in solar radiation parameterizations. All such models have been based on the reflected flux from non-plane-parallel cloud fields. In this study, it is shown that the Ž . AeffectiveB cloud fraction based on absorption or transmission could differ considerably from that based on reflection and, moreover, is not constant throughout the solar spectrum even for fixed cloud geometry. Furthermore, the representation of cloud radiative forcing at the surface and at the top of the atmosphere in terms of cloud fractions are based on different AeffectiveB cloud fractions. Therefore, a simple interpretation of measured values of the forcing ratio is not possible when geometric effects are present. q 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Observed Southern Ocean Cloud Properties and Shortwave Reflection. Part I: Calculation of SW Flux from Observed Cloud Properties*

The sensitivity of the reflection of shortwave radiation over the Southern Ocean to the cloud properties there is estimated using observations from a suite of passive and active satellite instruments in combination with radiative transfer modeling. A composite cloud property observational data description is constructed that consistently incorporates mean cloud liquid water content, ice water c...

The Effect of Cumulus Cloud Field Anisotropy on Domain-Averaged Solar Fluxes and Atmospheric Heating Rates

Cumulus clouds can become tilted or elongated in the presence of wind shear. Nevertheless, most studies of the interaction of cumulus clouds and radiation have assumed these clouds to be isotropic. This paper describes an investigation of the effect of fair-weather cumulus cloud field anisotropy on domain-averaged solar fluxes and atmospheric heating rate profiles. A stochastic field generation...

Diffuse fraction of UV radiation under partly cloudy skies as defined by the Automated Surface Observation System (ASOS)

[1] A major limitation in predicting the ultraviolet-B (UVB) irradiance on organisms is the difficulty in determining the UVB under partly cloudy sky conditions. This study developed models for estimating the diffuse fraction of ultraviolet-A (UVA) and UVB radiation under partly cloudy skies based on National Weather Service (NWS) cloud cover measurements and Department of Agriculture (USDA) UV...

The Role of the Effective Cloud Albedo for Climate Monitoring and Analysis

Cloud properties and the Earth’s radiation budget are defined as essential climate variables by the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS). The cloud albedo is a measure for the portion of solar radiation reflected back to space by clouds. This information is essential for the analysis and interpretation of the Earth’s radiation budget and the solar surface irradiance. We present and discuss a ...
