چکیده

This paper argues the need for providing a covert backchannel communication mechanism in authentication protocols, discusses various practical uses for such a channel, and desirable features for its design and deployment. Such a mechanism would leverage the current authentication channel to carry out the covert communication rather than introducing a separate one. The communication would need to be oblivious to an adversary observing it, possibly as a man-in-the-middle. We discuss the properties that such channels would need to have for the various scenarios in which they would be used. Also, we show their potential for mitigating the effects of a number of security breaches currently occurring in these scenarios.

Covert Channels through External Interference

This paper introduces interference channels, a new kind of covert channel that works by creating external interference on a shared communications medium (such as a wireless network). Unlike previous covert channels, here the covert sender does not need to compromise an authorized sender or require the ability to send messages on the network, but only needs the ability to jam traffic for short i...

Covert Channels in the IP Time To Live Field

Covert channels are used for the secret transfer of information. Unlike encryption, which only protects the information from unauthorised observers, covert channels aim to hide the very existence of the communication. The huge amount of data and vast number of different network protocols in the Internet makes it an ideal high-capacity vehicle for covert communication. Covert channels pose a ser...

Behavioral Mimicry Covert Communication

Covert communication refers to the process of communicating data through a channel that is neither designed, nor intended to transfer information. Traditionally, covert channels are considered as security threats in computer systems and a great deal of attention has been given to countermeasures for covert communication schemes. The evolution of computer networks led the communication community...

Detection And Elimination Of Covert Communication In Transport And Internet Layer – A Survey

Covert channels use stealth communications to compromise the security policies of systems. They constitute an important security threat since they can be used to exfiltrate confidential data from networks. TCP/IP protocols are used everyday and are subject to covert channels problems. Covert channels are used for the secret transfer of information. Encryption only protects communication from be...

Communication over the Internet using Covert Channels

A covert channel is a mechanism that can be used to communicate data across network or between processes within the system by violating the networks/ systems security policy and in a manner that goes unnoticed. An effective covert channel is the one that is undetectable by the adversary and can provide high degree of privacy. The goal of the covert channel is to communicate data from one host t...
