Nanochlorum eucaryotum: a Very Reduced Coccoid Species of Marine Chlorophyceae

چکیده
Cell Division, Chlorococcales, Chloroplast, DNA Content, Nanochlorum Nanochlorum eucaryotum was isolated from a sea water aquarium housing different sponge species, cucumarias, small crustaceans and annelids. This bright green marine alga differs from all other known coccoid species. Its most prominent features are its very small cell size (1.5 nm) and its reduced cellular organization. Its cell contains one nucleus, one chloroplast, one mitochondrium and small vacuoles. Sometimes a Golgi apparatus can be seen. No other subcellular features have been observed. The cell wall is thin and smooth and does not contain any material of high electron density; only dividing cells show a rougher surface. The cells split into two daughter cells. N o sexual reproduction has been observed in this organism. We have analyzed the ultrastructural cell organization, the amount of total DNA and RNA per cell, the pigment composition, the growth requirements and the sensitivity towards different inhibitors (chloramphenicol, cycloheximid, penicillin, lysozym and cellulase). The results afford the introduction of a new species; a new family or suborder of coccoid green algae is discussed.

Growth and Photosynthesis of Nanochlorum eucaryotum, a New and Extremely Small Eucaryotic Green Alga
Nanochlorum eucaryotum is a very small species of unicellular coccoid green algae (1.5 nm). The growth of Nanochlorum under different conditions of salinity, pH and light intensities was studied. Optimal growth rates were observed with normal sea water salinity and low light conditions at pH 7.0. The contents of chlorophylls, carotinoids, soluble proteins and the chlorophyll a to chlorophyll b ...

The diversity of eukaryotic microorganisms is far from fully described, as indicated by the vast number of unassigned genotypes retrieved by environmental sequencing or metagenomics. We isolated several strains of unicellular green algae from algal biofilms growing on tree bark in a Southeast Asian tropical rainforest and determined them to be relatives of an unidentified lineage of environment...
متن کاملFatty Acid Composition in the Lipids of some Marine Chiorococcales and Eustigmatales
The fatty acid composition in the lipids of six coccoid microalgae species ( ~ 2 îm in diameter) was investigated. In addition to analyses of ultrastructure and pigment content, lipid composition is shown to be a chem otaxonom ic tool in the classification of algae. The four species of Chiorococ cales (Chlorophyceae) — the marine species as well as the fresh water species, both kept in artific...

Persian Gulf is known as an environmental resource of unique species. In the present survey, the floristic composition of marine algae of Hengam Island in Hormozgan province was investigated. Sampling was performed at four stations of the tidal zone from March 2012 to April 2014.45 marine algae species were identified in Hengam Island including23, 11 and 11 species belong to Rhodophyceae, Chlor...
متن کاملIdentification of Chlorophyceae based on 18S rDNA sequences from Persian Gulf
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Chlorophyceae are important constituents of marine phytoplankton. The taxonomy of Chlorophyceae was traditionally based solely on morphological characteristics. In the present research project, genetic diversity was investigated to analyze five species of Chlorophyceae from waters of the Persian Gulf. MATERIALS AND METHODS A clone library of the ribosomal small subun...
