The monoclinic phase in PZT: new light on morphotropic phase boundaries
نویسندگان
چکیده
$! A summary of the work recently carried out on the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) of PZT is presented. By means of x-ray powder diffraction on ceramic samples of excellent quality, the MPB has been successfully characterized by changing temperature in a series of closely spaced compositions. As a result, an unexpected monoclinic phase has been found to exist in between the well-known tetragonal and rhombohedral PZT phases. A detailed structural analysis, together with the inves%igation of the field effect in this region of compositions, have led to an important advance in understanding the mechanisms responsible for the physical properties of PZT as well as other piezoelectric materials with similar morphotropic phase boundaries. u.4’ L

Local-scale structures across the morphotropic phase boundary in PbZr1−xTixO3
Lead zirconate titanate (PZT) is one of the most widely studied piezoelectric materials, mainly because of its 'mysterious' relationship between the so-called morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) and its strong piezoelectric coupling factor. Using results from a pair distribution function analysis, this paper examines how the complex local structure in PZT affects the long-range average structure ...
متن کاملMechanical and Dielectric Response of PZT and Tetragonal to Monoclinic Phase Transition: I. Theory
The PZT material near the morphotropic phase boundary where a monoclinic phase was observed is studied in this paper. A theory of the tetragonal to monoclinic phase transition was developed within the Landau free energy approach. The order parameter is the electric polarization vector. The phase transition from the tetragonal to the monoclinic phase is of the first order near the second order. ...
متن کاملStability of ferroic phases in the highly piezoelectric Pb(ZrxTi1-x)O3 ceramics.
The morphotropic phase boundary in the phase diagram of the technologically important Pb(ZrxTi1-x)O3 (PZT) ceramics has been traditionally believed to separate ferroelectric tetragonal and rhombohedral phase regions. This old picture has come under close scrutiny during the last eight years following the discovery of new monoclinic phases in the Cm and Cc space groups. This article presents a b...
متن کاملFinite-temperature properties of Pb(Zr1-xTi(x))O3 alloys from first principles
A first-principles-derived approach is developed to study finite-temperature properties of Pb(Zr1-xTix)O3 (PZT) solid solutions near the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB). Structural and piezoelectric predictions are in excellent agreement with experimental data and direct first-principles results. A low-temperature monoclinic phase is confirmed to exist, and is demonstrated to act as a bridge ...
متن کاملExploring the morphotropic phase boundary in copper(II)-modified Pb[Zr0.54Ti0.46]O3 ferroelectrics
Copper(II)-doped Pb[Zr0.54Ti0.46]O3 (PZT) ferroelectrics with a dopant concentration of 0.25 mol % were investigated at high magnetic fields, enabling an enhanced resolution of the structural distortion at the dopant site. The results obtained suggest that Cu2+ substitutes as an acceptor centre for [Zr,Ti]4+ in oxygen octahedra with tetragonal, monoclinic and rhombohedral distortion, confirming...
