Instrument simulation for the analysis of cosmic ray electron with the Fermi LAT

چکیده

The Fermi LAT collaboration has built up a detailed Monte Carlo simulation to characterize the instrument response and tune its performance. The simulation code is built around the widely used GEANT4 toolkit and was carefully validated against beam test and flight data. This poster shows how the full LAT simulation is used to develop the event selection for the Cosmic-Ray Electron (CRE) analysis so as to optimize the instrument performance. In particular, we will show in detail the determination of the geometry factor and the residual hadron contamination. The very accurate MC simulation proved to be fundamental to control the systematic uncertainties on the CRE spectrum measured by the Fermi LAT.

Data Analysis for the Measurement of High Energy Cosmic Ray Electron/Positron Spectrum with Fermi-LAT

The Large Area Telescope (LAT) instrument on board the Fermi satellite consists of a multilayer silicon-strip tracker interleaved with tungsten converters (TKR), followed by a CsI crystal hodoscopic calorimeter (CAL). Sixteen TKR and CAL modules are assembled in a 4×4 array. A segmented anticoincidence plastic scintillator (ACD) surrounds the TKRs. The primary cosmic-ray electron/positron energ...

Fermi LAT Measurements of the Diffuse Gamma-Ray Emission at Intermediate Galactic Latitudes

The diffuse Galactic γ-ray emission is produced by cosmic rays (CRs) interacting with the interstellar gas and radiation field. Measurements by the Energetic Gamma-Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) instrument on the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory (CGRO) indicated excess γ-ray emission ≥ 1 GeV relative to diffuse Galactic γ-ray emission models consistent with directly measured CR spectra (the so-c...

Jet Physics of Accreting Super-Massive Black Holes in the Era of the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope

The Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope with its main instrument on-board, the Large Area Telescope (LAT), opened a new era in the study of high-energy emission from Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). When combined with contemporaneous groundand space-based observations, Fermi-LAT achieves its full capability to characterize the jet structure and the emission mechanisms at work in radio-loud AGN with di...

First Results from Glast-lat Integrated Towers Cosmic Ray Data Taking and Montecarlo Comparison

GLAST Large Area Telescope (LAT) is a gamma ray telescope instrumented with silicon-strip detector planes and sheets of converter, followed by a calorimeter (CAL) and surrounded by an anticoincidence system (ACD). This instrument is sensitive to gamma rays in the energy range between 20 MeV and 300 GeV. At present, the first towers have been integrated and pre-launch data taking with cosmic ray...

The Hunt for Dark Photons

Although the idea of heavy photons has been around for almost 30 years, it gained new interest just a few years ago when theorists suggested that it could explain why several experiments detected more high-energy positrons—the antimatter partners of electrons—than scientists had expected in the cosmic radiation of space. Data from the PAMELA satellite experiment; the AMS instrument aboard the I...
