Fixpoint semantics for active integrity constraints
نویسندگان
چکیده
Active integrity constraints (AICs) constitute a formalism to associate with a database not just the constraints it should adhere to, but also how to fix the database in case one or more of these constraints are violated. The intuitions regarding which repairs are “good” given such a description are closely related to intuitions that live in various areas of non-monotonic reasoning, such as logic programming and autoepistemic logic. In this paper, we apply approximation fixpoint theory, an abstract, algebraic framework designed to unify semantics of non-monotonic logics, to the field of AICs. This results in a new family of semantics for AICs. We study properties of our new semantics and relationships to existing semantics. In particular, we argue that two of the newly defined semantics stand out. Grounded repairs have a simple definition that is purely based on semantic principles that semantics for AICs should adhere to. And, as we show, they coincide with the intended interpretation of AICs on many examples. The second semantics of interest is the AFT-well-founded semantics: it is a computationally cheap semantics that provides upper and lower bounds for many other classes of repairs.

متن کاملGrounded Fixpoints and Active Integrity Constraints
The formalism of active integrity constraints was introduced as a way to specify particular classes of integrity constraints over relational databases together with preferences on how to repair existing inconsistencies. The rule-based syntax of such integrity constraints also provides algorithms for finding such repairs that achieve the best asymptotic complexity. However, the different semanti...
متن کاملDeclarative Semantics for Active Integrity Constraints
We study active integrity constraints, a formalism designed to describe integrity constraints on databases and to specify preferred ways to enforce them. The original semantics proposed for active integrity constraints is based on the concept of a founded repair. We point out that groundedness underlying founded repairs does not prevent cyclic justifications and so, may be inappropriate in some...
متن کاملDeclarative Semantics for Revision Programming and Connections to Active Integrity Constraints
We investigate revision programming, a formalism to describe constraints on belief sets (databases, knowledge bases), and to specify preferred ways to enforce them. We propose several semantics for revision programs combining ideas from logic programming and active integrity constraints, a formalism to model preferred ways to enforce integrity constraints on databases. We present results on the...
متن کاملAn effective fixpoint semantics for linear logic programs
In this paper we investigate the theoretical foundation of a new bottom-up semantics for linear logic programs, and more precisely for the fragment of LinLog (Andreoli, 1992) that consists of the language LO (Andreoli & Pareschi, 1991) enriched with the constant 1. We use constraints to symbolically and finitely represent possibly infinite collections of provable goals. We define a fixpoint sem...
