Auditory brain stem potentials recorded at different scalp locations in neonates and adults.

چکیده
The auditory evoked brain stem potential was recorded in 14 normal full-term infants and nine normal-hearing adults. Silver-silver chloride electrodes were placed at nasion, forehead, vertex, each mastoid over the bony prominence, and the seventh cervical vertebra (noncephalic reference) in order to study the scalp distribution of the auditory brain stem response. Large differences in the scalp distribution between the newborn and adult populations were observed. At the ipsilateral mastoid, an x wave occurring at approximately 2 ms and a y wave occurring at approximately 3.3 ms were identified in the adult; this contrasts to a y wave at approximately 3.7 ms in the neonate. It appears that there are either separate generators for some of the components in the adult versus the neonate, and/or as the nervous system matures, myelinization occurs with a concomitant change in the scalp distribution of the auditory brain stem potentials.

Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potentials
Brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) are electrical field potentials generated by stimulation of the auditory pathways. With repetitive auditory stimulation, reproducible electrical potentials can be elicited and recorded from scalp electrodes. These waves are generated by specific brain regions and occur at predictable intervals. Clinically, this neurophysiological property is useful t...
متن کاملBrainstem auditory evoked response recorded using maximum length sequences in term neonates.
Brainstem auditory evoked response (BAER) was studied in term neonates using maximum length sequences (MLS), which allows presentation of acoustic stimuli at much higher rate than possible with conventional averaging technique. The response waveforms, especially for waves III and V, were well defined at the click rates of 91-455/s. Wave latencies and interpeak intervals at various click rates w...
متن کاملThe representation of voice onset time in the cortical auditory evoked potentials of young children.
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to determine whether, in young children, a cortical neurophysiologic representation of the voicing status of a stop consonant could be found in the absence of the N1 component in the cortical auditory evoked potential (CAEP). In adults, a 'double-on' N1 response is often considered a cortical marker of VOT representation. METHODS Scalp-recorded CAEPs were m...
متن کاملAltered visual-evoked potentials in congenitally deaf adults.
Visual-evoked potentials recorded from the scalp of congenitally deaf adults were significantly larger over both auditory and visual cortical areas than in normal hearing adults. Over temporal and frontal areas peripheral stimuli presented at long intervals elicited N150 components which were larger in deaf than in hearing subjects. Over occipital and parietal areas peripheral and foveal stimul...
متن کاملAge and Gender Effects On Auditory Brain Stem Response (ABR)
Objectives: Auditory Brain Stem Response (ABR) is a result of eight nerve and brain stem nuclei stimulation. Several factors may affect the latencies, interpeak latencies and amplitudes in ABR especially sex and age. In this study, age and sex influence on ABR were studied. Methods: This study was performed on 120 cases (60 males and 60 females) at Akhavan rehabilitation center of university...
