Contrasting functional traits maintain lichen epiphyte diversity in response to climate and autogenic succession

چکیده
There is an overwhelming bias in plant biogeography and ecology towards ‘vascular’ or ‘higher’ plants. Consequently, paradigms presented in key textbooks (Pears, 1985; Lomolino et al., 2005) represent a consensus of evidence that is limited in its scope to an estimated 14% of the world’s ‘botanical’ biodiversity (e.g. including plant and fungal species, based on estimates of global richness in Hammond, 1995). Given the modern emphasis on biodiversity conservation (Heywood, 1995; Gaston & Spicer, 2004), and the importance of biogeographical research in tackling major conservation issues, it is critical that biogeographical studies include diverse, though often neglected, components of the world’s biota Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE), Edinburgh, UK

Lichen community change in response to succession in aspen forests of the southern Rocky Mountains
In western North America, quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) is the most common hardwood in montane landscapes. Fire suppression, grazing and wildlife management practices, and climate patterns of the past century are all potential threats to aspen coverage in this region. If aspen-dependent species are losing habitat, this raises concerns about their long-term viability. Though lichens have a...
متن کاملGastropods slow down succession and maintain diversity in cryptogam communities.
Herbivore effects on diversity and succession were often studied in plants, but not in cryptogams. Besides direct herbivore effects on cryptogams, we expected indirect effects by changes in competitive interactions among cryptogams. Therefore, we conducted a long-term gastropod exclusion experiment testing for grazing effects on epiphytic cryptogam communities. We estimated the grazing damage, ...
متن کاملAutogenic succession and deterministic recovery following disturbance in soil bacterial communities
The response of bacterial communities to environmental change may affect local to global nutrient cycles. However the dynamics of these communities following disturbance are poorly understood, given that they are often evaluated over macro-ecological time scales and end-point measurements. In order to understand the successional trajectory of soil bacterial communities following disturbances an...
متن کاملAssembly patterns of soil‐dwelling lichens after glacier retreat in the European Alps
AIM To assess the spatial-temporal dynamics of primary succession following deglaciation in soil-dwelling lichen communities. LOCATION European Alps (Austria, Switzerland and Italy). METHODS Five glacier forelands subjected to relevant glacier retreat during the last century were investigated. In each glacier foreland, three successional stages were selected at increasing distance from the ...
متن کاملGlobal change and the functional diversity of cryptogams in northern biomes
Climate change in the (Sub)Arctic is expected to be more extreme and rapid compared to other regions on Earth. At these northern latitudes, cryptogams (bryophytes and lichens) are the dominant vegetation component both in terms of abundance and biodiversity, fulfilling important ecosystem functions such as regulation of hydrology, carbon balance, nitrogen fixation and preservation of permafrost...
