Flat-directions in Grand Unification with U (1) R Symmetry

It is shown that in SO(10) and SU (5) models having a U (1) R symmetry, the requirement of breaking the unified group to the Standard Model leads to flat directions in the scalar potential. These can lead to a " cosmological modulus problem ". This is relevant to grand unified models of inflation, where U (1) R symmetries are often used to insure the flatness of the inflaton potential. A way th...

Dynamical solutions to the horizon and flatness problems.

We discuss in some detail the requirements on an early-Universe model that solves the horizon and flatness problems during the epoch of classical cosmology (t ≥ ti ≫ 10 sec). We show that a dynamical resolution of the horizon problem requires superluminal expansion (or very close to it) and that a truly satisfactory resolution of the flatness problem requires entropy production. This implies th...

Inflation and Unification

Two distinct classes of realistic inflationary models consistent with present observations are reviewed. The first example relies on the Coleman-Weinberg potential and is readily realized within the framework of spontaneously broken global symmetries (for instance, global U(1)B−L). Depending on the parameters either new or large field inflation is possible. The second example exploits supersymm...

The evolution of a universe with Brans-Dicke gravity and nonzero curvature is investigated here. We present the equations of motion and their solutions during the radiation dominated era. In a Friedman-Robertson-Walker cosmology we show explicitly that the three possible values of curvature κ = +1, 0,−1 divide the evolution of the Brans-Dicke universe into dynamically distinct classes just as f...

Constraints on Inflation Models from Supersymmetry Breakings

Effects of soft SUSY-breaking terms on inflation potentials are discussed. There exist generic constraints that must be satisfied in order not for the inflaton potential to loose its flatness. We examine explicitly the constraints in the case of a hybrid inflation model and find that the coupling constant λ between the inflaton and the “waterfall-direction” field is bounded as 2.0 × 10−6 ∼ λ. T...
