چکیده

Based on Guo and Holyoak’s (2002a, 2002b) work, we propose a stochastic comparison-grouping theory of multialternative decision making to explain three contextinduced violations of rational choice. The attraction effect and the similarity effect are explained by stochastic comparison grouping, according to which similar alternatives are compared more frequently than dissimilar alternatives are. The compromise effect is explained by the assumption that attribute values are perceived according to a basic psychophysical function, in addition to the comparison grouping mechanism. Furthermore, this model explains individual differences in choice by assuming interpersonal differences in pre-existing attitude toward products.

A mathematical model for distinguishing bias from sensitivity effects in multialternative detection tasks

Studies investigating the neural bases of cognitive phenomena such as perception, attention and decisionmaking increasingly employ multialternative task designs. It is essential in such designs to distinguish the neural correlates of behavioral choices arising from changes in perceptual factors, such as enhanced sensitivity to sensory information, from those arising from changes in decisional f...

Study of buffer effects on the grouping efficacy measure of stochastic cell formation problem

This paper deals the stochastic cell formation problem (SCFP). The paper presents a new nonlinear integer programming model for the SCFP in which the effect of buffer size on the grouping efficacy of cells has been investigated. The objective function is the maximization of the grouping efficacy of cells. A chance constraint is applied to explore the effect of buffer on the SCFP. Processing tim...

Distinguishing bias from sensitivity effects in multialternative detection tasks.

Studies investigating the neural bases of cognitive phenomena increasingly employ multialternative detection tasks that seek to measure the ability to detect a target stimulus or changes in some target feature (e.g., orientation or direction of motion) that could occur at one of many locations. In such tasks, it is essential to distinguish the behavioral and neural correlates of enhanced percep...

The multiattribute linear ballistic accumulator model of context effects in multialternative choice.

Context effects occur when a choice between 2 options is altered by adding a 3rd alternative. Three major context effects--similarity, compromise, and attraction--have wide-ranging implications across applied and theoretical domains, and have driven the development of new dynamic models of multiattribute and multialternative choice. We propose the multiattribute linear ballistic accumulator (ML...

Multialternative decision field theory: a dynamic connectionist model of decision making.

The authors interpret decision field theory (J. R. Busemeyer & J. T. Townsend, 1993) as a connectionist network and extend it to accommodate multialternative preferential choice situations. This article shows that the classic weighted additive utility model (see R. L. Keeney & H. Raiffa, 1976) and the classic Thurstone preferential choice model (see L. L. Thurstone, 1959) are special cases of t...
