Turbo Codes for the Transmission of JPEG2000 Compressed Imagery over Flat Rayleigh Fading Channels

The recent growth in personal multimedia communication devices being used for image transmission, have poised a challenge to protect such data against loss over mobile radio channels. This paper investigates several error protection schemes for robust transmission of JPEG2000 compressed imagery over mobile radio channels affected by various amounts of fading degradation. The nature of JPEG2000 coded code-stream offers suitable opportunity for hierarchical distribution of channel protection across layers thus providing flexible means for facing efficiently the task of delivering information over unreliable channels like fading radio links. In the paper the authors investigate the use of turbo codes, implementing several unequal error protection schemes for a JPEG2000 compressed imagery. The performance of these UEP (Unequal Error Protection) coding schemes have been evaluated with reference to different levels of channel fading and compared with a plain EEP (Equal Error Protection) solution. The results obtained provide guidelines concerning the selection of appropriate Turbo Coding parameters along with well established JPEG2000 error resilience tools.
