UBA 75633 INTERFACIAL BARRIERS TO THE TRANSPORT OF STEROLS AND OTHER ORGANIC COMPOUNDS AT THE AQUEOUS POLYSORBATE 8o-HEXADECANE INTERFACE

چکیده
I. The interfacial barrier controlled transport of some biologically important solutes in the aqueous polysorbate 8o-hexadecane system were investigated by means of the multiparticulate dispersion technique. 2. It was shown that the resistances to transport of cholesterol, /5-sitosterol, desmosterol, 2o~-hydroxycholesterol, and vitamin D~ across the oil/water interface, were of the order of lO3-1o: times greater than those for diffusion controlled mechanisms. 3. The effects of changing the polysorbate-8o concentration upon the transport rates of the solutes were investigated. Cholesterol, ~-sitosterol, and desmosterol showed little or no change of their permeability coefficients in the o . I -1% range of the surfactant concentration. These results suggest that for these compounds the drug-micelle complex is involved in the "transition" state. The data further suggest that a two-step mechanism is involved, viz. the approach of the solute loaded micelle to the interface and the unloading of the solute at the interface. 4. One of the interesting findings of this research relevant to biology is the possible correlation of these experiments to the intestinal gbsorption of cholesterol and fi-sitosterol. The present studies show that the interfacial resistance for fi-sitosterol is about Io times greater than that for cholesterol, while rat intestinal absorption studies how that cholesterol is absorbed 5-Io times more rapidly than ~-sitosterol.

متن کاملOccurrence of Antibiotics, Pharmaceuticals and Sterols at Select Surface and Wastewater Sites in Iowa
Interest has been expressed in tracing possible sources of contamination (e.g. from human or other waste) by using compounds such as pharmaceuticals, caffeine, and sterols in waste as potential source markers. This pilot study was designed to identify and measure a limited set of compounds in aqueous environmental samples to determine possible relations between these compounds to animal and hum...
متن کاملTransport of sterols to the plasma membrane of leek seedlings
To investigate the intracellular transport of sterols in etiolated leek (Allium porrum L.) seedlings, in vivo pulse-chase experiments with [1-14C]acetate were performed. Then, endoplasmic reticulum-, Golgi-, and plasma membrane (PM)-enriched fractions were prepared and analyzed for the radioactivity incorporated into free sterols. In leek seedlings sterols are present as a mixture in which (24R...
متن کاملTryptophan and Sterols from Salvia limbata
Background: Salvia limbata is an aromatic herbaceous plant and grows widely in Iran Turkey and Afghanistan. In the previous study, six flavones together with rosmarinic acid were isolated from the ethyl acetate and methanol extracts of S. limbata. In this report, we focused on the isolation and identification of the glycosylated sterols and the main accumulated amino acid of the species S. limb...
متن کاملEvaluation of the Anticonvulsant Activity of the Leaves of Glycyrrhiza glabra var. glandulifera Grown in Iran, as a Possible Renewable Source for Anticonvulsant Compounds
A review of the publications in traditional medicine indicates that the root of Glycyrrhiza glabra L., Fabaceae, is recommended for treatment of epilepsy. As a renewable source, the leaves of G. glabra var. glandulifera growing in Iran were examined for possible anticonvulsant activity. The anticonvulsant activity of the leaves’ ethanol extract and dichloromethane, f1, n-Hexane, f1A, and methan...
