چکیده

We report systematic HCN J=1-0 (and CO) observations of a sample of 53 infrared (IR) and/or CO-bright and/or luminous galaxies, including seven ultraluminous infrared galaxies, nearly 20 luminous infrared galaxies, and more than a dozen of the nearest normal spiral galaxies. This is the largest and most sensitive HCN survey of galaxies to date. All galaxies observed so far follow the tight correlation between the IR luminosity LIR and the HCN luminosity LHCN initially proposed by Solomon, Downes, & Radford, which is detailed in a companion paper. We also address here the issue of HCN excitation. There is no particularly strong correlation between LHCN and the 12μm luminosity; in fact, of all the four IRAS bands, the 12μm luminosity has the weakest correlation with the HCN luminosity. There is also no evidence of stronger HCN emission or a higher ratio of HCN and CO luminosities LHCN/LCO for galaxies with excess 12μm emission. This result implies that mid-IR radiative pumping, or populating, of the J=1 level of HCN by a mid-IR vibrational transition is not important compared with the collisional excitation by dense molecular hydrogen. Furthermore, large velocity gradient calculations justify the use of HCN J=1-0 emission as a tracer of high-density molecular gas (> ∼3×10 /τ cm) and give an estimate of the mass of dense molecular gas from HCN observations. Therefore, LHCN may be used as a measure of the total mass of dense molecular gas, and the luminosity ratio LHCN/LCO may indicate the fraction of molecular gas that is dense.

The Star Formation Rate and Dense Molecular Gas in Galaxies

HCN luminosity is a tracer of dense molecular gas, n(H2) > ∼3 × 10 cm, associated with star-forming giant molecular cloud (GMC) cores. We present the results and analysis of our survey of HCN emission from 65 infrared galaxies including 9 ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIGs, LIR > ∼10 L⊙), 22 luminous infrared galaxies (LIGs, 10 L⊙ < LIR < ∼10 L⊙) and 34 normal spiral galaxies with lower IR ...

Is HCN a True Tracer of Dense Molecular Gas in LIRGs and ULIRGs?

We present the results of the first HCO survey probing the dense molecular gas content of a sample of 16 luminous and ultraluminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs and ULIRGs). Previous work, based on HCN(1–0) observations, had shown that LIRGs and ULIRGs posses a significantly higher fraction of dense molecular gas compared to normal galaxies. While the picture issued from HCO partly confirms this re...

Comparison of dust-to-gas ratios in luminous, ultraluminous, and hyperluminous infrared galaxies

The dust-to-gas ratios in three different samples of luminous, ultraluminous, and hyperluminous infrared galaxies are calculated by modelling their radio to soft X-ray spectral energy distributions (SED) using composite models which account for the photoionizing radiation from HII regions, starbursts, or AGNs, and for shocks. The models are limited to a set which broadly reproduces the mid-IR f...

Observations of Dense Molecular Gas in a Quasar Host Galaxy at Z=6.42: Further Evidence for a Non-linear Dense Gas – Star Formation Relation at Early Cosmic Times

We report a sensitive search for the HCN(J=2→1) emission line towards SDSS J114816.64+525150.3 (hereafter: J1148+5251) at z=6.42 with the Very Large Array (VLA). HCN emission is a star formation indicator, tracing dense molecular hydrogen gas (n(H2) ≥ 10 4 cm) within star-forming molecular clouds. No emission was detected in the deep interferometer maps of J1148+5251. We derive a limit for the ...
