چکیده

We identify a large sample of isolated bright galaxies and their fainter satellites in the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS). We analyse the dynamics of ensembles of these galaxies selected according to luminosity and morphological type by stacking the positions of their satellites and estimating the velocity dispersion of the combined set. We test our methodology using realistic mock catalogues constructed from cosmological simulations. The method returns an unbiased estimate of the velocity dispersion provided that the isolation criterion is strict enough to avoid contamination and that the scatter in halo mass at fixed primary luminosity is small. Using a maximum likelihood estimator that accounts for interlopers, we determine the satellite velocity dispersion within a projected radius of 175 h kpc. The dispersion increases with the luminosity of the primary and is larger for elliptical galaxies than for spiral galaxies of similar bJ luminosity. Calibrating the mass-velocity dispersion relation using our mock catalogues, we find a dynamical mass within 175 h kpc of M175/h M⊙ ≃ 4.0 +2.3 −1.5 × 10 12 (LbJ/L∗) for elliptical galaxies and M175/h M⊙ ≃ 6.3 +6.3 −3.1 10 11 (LbJ/L∗) 1.6 for spiral galaxies. Finally, we compare our results with recent studies and investigate their limitations using our mock catalogues.

Measuring the Distribution of Galaxies Between Halos

We develop a method to measure the probability, P (N ;M), of finding N galaxies in a dark-matter halo of mass M from the theoretically determined clustering properties of dark-matter halos and the observationally measured clustering properties of galaxies. Knowledge of this function and the distribution of the dark matter completely specifies all clustering properties of galaxies on scales larg...

How are Bright Galaxies Embedded within their Dark Matter Halos?

Recent studies suggest that the orientations of large, bright galaxies within their dark matter halos are related to the morphologies of the galaxies themselves. Elliptical galaxies tend to be oriented such that, in projection on the sky, the mass (i.e., the dark matter) is well-aligned with the luminous galaxy. On the other hand, disk galaxies tend to be oriented such that their angular moment...

The pairwise velocity dispersion of galaxies: luminosity dependence and a new test of galaxy formation models

We present the first determination of the pairwise velocity dispersion (PVD) for galaxies in different luminosity intervals using the final release of the TwoDegree Field Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS). We have discovered quite surprisingly that the relative velocities of the faint galaxies at small separation are very high, around 700 km s, reaching similar values as the brightest galaxies. A...

The cross-correlation between galaxies and groups: probing the galaxy distribution in and around dark matter haloes

We determine the cross-correlation function between galaxies and galaxy groups, using both the Two-Degree Field Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS) and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Groups are identified using the halo-based group finder developed by Yang et al., which is optimized to associate those galaxies to a group that belong to the same dark matter halo. Our galaxy-group cross correla...

Evidence for Tidal Stripping of Dark Matter Halos in Massive Cluster-lenses

In this letter, we present the results of our study of galaxy-galaxy lensing in massive cluster-lenses spanning z = 0.17 to 0.58, utilizing high-quality archival Hubble Space Telescope (HST ) data. Local anisotropies in the shear maps are assumed to arise from dark matter substructure within these clusters. Associating the substructure with bright early-type cluster galaxies, we quantify the pr...
