چکیده

The data gathered by human observers studying the behavior of nonhuman primates often reveal a social structure of apparently striking complexity. Social groups are composed of a number of different families of different dominance ranks, each of which both competes and cooperates with other families in the group. It is often difficult for the observer to imagine that the monkeys could function or compete effectively without some understanding of the nature of kinship and dominance rank. At the same time, however, the apparent complexity of the animals' social structure may simply be an artifact resulting from our own ability to discern their matrilines and dominance hierarchies. The monkeys themselves may behave 'intelligently' while at the same time not recognizing the subtle discriminations that underlie their behavior. Numerous studies have now documented kin recognition in animals, in the sense that kin are treated differently from unrelated individuals (see reviews by HOLMES & SHERMAN, 1983; GOUZOULES & GOUZOULES, 1987; FLETCHER & MICHENER, 1987; WALDMAN Bt al., 1988). Furthermore, several studies of Old World monkeys have also suggested that nonhuman primates recognize the close associates of other individuals. In an earlier study of redirected aggression among vervet monkeys, for example, we found that animals were significantly more likely to threaten

The role of grunts in reconciling opponents and facilitating interactions among adult female baboons

Female baboons, Papio cynocephalus ursinus, often grunt when approaching lower-ranking females. These grunts appear to have a mollifying effect on subordinates. Observations of 19 adult females conducted over an 11-month period in the Okavango Delta, Botswana, revealed that high-ranking females were less likely to supplant more subordinate females, and more likely to engage in friendly interact...

Self-Protective Function of Post-Conflict Bystander Affiliation in Mandrills

BACKGROUND Affiliative interactions exchanged between victims of aggression and individuals not involved in the original aggression (bystanders) have been observed in various species. Three hypothetical functions have been proposed for these interactions: consolation, self-protection and substitute reconciliation, but data to test them are scanty. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS We conducted p...

Kin-mediated reconciliation substitutes for direct reconciliation in female baboons.

It has been hypothesized that group-living mammals engage in reconciliation (post-conflict affiliation between former opponents) to reduce the disruptive costs of aggression and restore opponents' tolerance to baseline levels. Recipients of aggression are sometimes reluctant to tolerate the proximity of a recent opponent, however, in apparent fear that aggression will be renewed. In such cases,...

Post-Conflict Affiliation by Chimpanzees with Aggressors: Other-Oriented versus Selfish Political Strategy

Consolation, i.e., post-conflict affiliation directed from bystanders to recent victims of aggression, has recently acquired an important role in the debate about empathy in great apes. Although similar contacts have been also described for aggressors, i.e., appeasement, they have received far less attention and their function and underlying mechanisms remain largely unknown. An exceptionally l...

Depressive-like behavioral profiles in captive-bred single- and socially-housed rhesus and cynomolgus macaques: a species comparison

BACKGROUND To unravel the causes of major depressive disorder (MDD), the third leading cause of disease burden around the world, ethological animal models have recently been proposed. Our previous studies highlighted a depressive-like profile among single- and socially-housed farm-bred cynomolgus macaques. Although phylogenetically close, cynomolgus and rhesus macaques, the two most commonly us...
