Single Transverse-Spin Asymmetry in Drell-Yan Production at Large and Moderate Transverse Momentum

چکیده
We study the single-transverse spin asymmetry for the Drell-Yan process. We consider production of the lepton pair at large transverse momentum, q⊥ ∼ Q, where Q is the pair’s mass. The spin asymmetry is then of higher twist and may be generated by twist-three quark-gluon correlation functions. Expanding the result for q⊥ ≪ Q, we make contact with the transversemomentum-dependent QCD factorization involving the so-called Sivers functions. We find that the two mechanisms, quark-gluon correlations on one hand and the Sivers effect on the other, contain the same physics in this region. This ties the two together and imposes an important constraint on phenomenological studies of single transverse spin asymmetries. Intrinsic transverse momentum and transverse spin asymmetries
We investigate leading twist transverse momentum dependent origins of transverse spin asymmetries in hadron-hadron collisions. The chiral-odd T-odd distribution function with intrinsic transverse momentum dependence, which would signal an intrinsic handedness of quarks inside a hadron, could account for single spin asymmetries and at the same time for the large cos 2φ asymmetry in the unpolariz...

Sivers asymmetry, adopted to explain transverse single spin asymmetries (SSA) observed in inclusive pion production, p↑ p → πX and p̄↑ p → πX, is used here to compute SSA in Drell-Yan processes; in this case, by considering the differential cross section in the lepton-pair invariant mass, rapidity and transverse momentum, other mechanisms which may originate SSA cannot contribute. We show that initial-state interactions contribute to the cos 2φ distribution in unpolarized Drell-Yan lepton pair production p p and p p → `+`−X, without suppression. The asymmetry is expressed as a product of chiral-odd distributions h1 (x1, p 2 ⊥) × h ⊥ 1 (x2, k 2 ⊥), where the quark-transversity function h1 (x, p 2 ⊥) is the transverse momentum dependent, light-cone momentum distribution of...

The role of intrinsic transverse momentum both in unpolarized and polarized processes is discussed. We consider inclusive cross sections for pion production in hadronic collisions and for Drell-Yan processes. We reanalyze transverse single spin asymmetries (SSA) in inclusive pion production , p ↑ p → π X, in terms of Sivers effect and show its contribution to AUL in semi-inclusive DIS (SIDIS). ...
