Predicting Post-Harvest Performance of Advance Red Oak Reproduction in the Southern Appalachians
نویسنده
چکیده
Models are presented for predicting: (1) height growth of red oak advance reproduction after dearcutting, and (2) the probability of stems becoming dominants or codominants in new stands as a function of preharvest size of advance reproduction and site quality. The second model permits silviculturists o predict, prior to harvest, the contribution to a new stand of an existing population of advance red oak reproduction. FoR. SCl. 36(4):908-916. ADDITIONAL

A Shelterwood Method for Regenerating Red Oak in the Southern Appalachians
A shelterwood method is described that provides stand conditions that enhance the growth of estabhshed red oak advance reproduction, thereby improving the chances of maintaining an oak component in the next stand. Stocking of a mature, fully stocked stand is reduced to 60%, 65%, and 70% of initial stand basal area where oak site index is 70, 80, and 90 ft, respectively. The basal area reduction...
متن کاملEfficacy and Associated Factors of Even- and Uneven-Aged Management to Promote Oak Regeneration in the Missouri Ozarks
Oak regeneration problems have been noted in the Missouri Ozarks and elsewhere in the eastern United States. Alteration of disturbance regimes, competition from nonoak species, and high overstory stocking are believed to be major barriers that impede oak regeneration. We studied regeneration in upland oak forests that were harvested by both even-aged (clearcutting) and uneven-aged (single-tree ...
متن کاملFire in Southern Appalachians: Fuels, Stand Structure and Oaks
Managers responsible for maintaining the diversity and productivity of Southern Appalachian forests are increasingly turning to prescribed fire as an important management tool in oak dominated forests. The decision to use fire with increasing frequency and spatial extent is based, in part, on an emerging sense of the prehistoric significance of fire in this landscape and its potential to contro...
متن کاملFire Ecology and Fire Management in the Southern Appalachians: Rationale for and Effects of Prescribed Fire
Fire suppression in the Southern Appalachians has led to changes in forests dominated by yellow pine (Pinus subgenus pinus) and oak (Quercus) species. Recently, management agencies have begun to prescribe fire with the aim of restoring pre-suppression conditions. Here, I examine the use of prescribed fire in the Southern Appalachians from two perspectives. First, I review the values and goals t...
متن کاملForest regeneration composition and development in upland, mixed-oak forests.
Advance regeneration in 52 mature mixed-oak stands was analyzed and described. Red maple (Acer rubrum L.) was the most abundant species in the study area. Among oak (Quercus) species, northern red oak (Q. rubra L.) was the most abundant within the Allegheny Plateau physiographic province, whereas chestnut oak (Q. montana L.) was the most abundant within the Ridge and Valley physiographic provin...
