Sex differences in jealousy: Information search and cognitive preoccupation
نویسنده
چکیده
Two experiments test the prediction derived from the evolutionary view of jealousy that men are particularly concerned with a mate s sexual infidelity and women with a mate s emotional infidelity. Experiment 1 examines sex differences with respect to the information men and women actively request from their partner when suspecting her or his infidelity. Experiment 2 tests the hypothesis that within a heterosexual romantic relationship men are more occupied with thoughts about a mate s sexual infidelity, whereas women are more occupied with thoughts about a mate s emotional infidelity. The results of both experiments support the evolutionary view of sex-specific jealousy mechanisms. The implications of the present findings are discussed. 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Sex Differences in Romantic Jealousy: Evaluating Past and Present Relationship Experience
Research on sex differences in jealousy has been controversial with contrasting results. Many have examined how factors such as relationship experience may play a role in men’s and women’s jealousy, yet most has investigated sexual and emotional jealousy. Past authors suggest that investigating jealousy as a multidimensional construct, i.e., cognitive, emotional, and behavioral forms, may provi...

In a recent article, Harris (2003) concluded that the data do not support the existence of evolved sex differences in jealousy. Harris' review correctly identifies fatal flaws in three lines of evidence (spousal abuse, homicide, morbid jealousy), but her criticism of two other lines of evidence (self-report responses, psychophysiological measures) is based, in part, on a mischaracterization of ...

متن کاملSex differences in jealousy: a population-based twin study in Sweden.
According to the theory of evolved sex differences in jealousy, the challenge for women to ensure paternal investment increased their jealousy response to emotional infidelity, whereas paternal uncertainty exerted selective pressures that shaped men to become more distressed by sexual infidelity. Several studies have investigated whether the effect of these sexually dimorphic selection pressure...
متن کاملEvidence for Conditional Sex Differences in Emotional but Not in Sexual Jealousy at the Automatic Level of Cognitive Processing
The two evolutionary psychological hypotheses that men react more jealous than women to sexual infidelity and women react more jealous than men to emotional infidelity are currently controversial because of apparently inconsistent results. We suggest that these inconsistencies can be resolved when the two hypotheses are evaluated separately and when the underlying cognitive processes are consid...
