Learning Styles and Student Performance in Java Programming Courses
نویسنده
چکیده
It is crucial for a teacher to take students’ learning styles into account to enhance teaching effectiveness. This study examines correlations between students’ learning styles and their performance in writing and debugging Java programs. Eighty-four college freshmen who enrolled in two introductory Java programming courses participated in this study. Students were given the Soloman-Felder Index of Learning Styles test to determine their preferred learning styles, which were correlated with their performance on three tests—a written test, a hands-on programming test, and a debugging test. It was found that sensing learners performed the best on the written test, and the reflective/sensing/visual/sequential learners achieved the highest average scores on each of the three tests.

Apprentice-Based Learning
Various methods have been proposed in the past to improve student learning by introducing new styles of working with assignments. These include problem-based learning, use of case studies and apprenticeship. In most courses, however, these proposals have not resulted in a widespread significant change of teaching methods. Most institutions still use a traditional lecture/lab class approach with...
متن کاملDistance Learning and Student Satisfaction in Java Programming Courses
Student satisfaction with distance learning is impacted by a variety of factors, including interaction with the instructor and the structure of the course. In an earlier article, we determined that student satisfaction as measured by course evaluation scores in an online discrete mathematics course taught by the first author was not statistically significantly different from that of students in...

Although conventional student assessments are extremely convenient for calculating student scores, they do not conceptualize how students organize their knowledge. Therefore, teachers and students rarely understand how to improve their future learning progress. The limitations of conventional testing methods indicate the importance of accurately assessing and representing student knowledge stru...
متن کاملStudent Modelling and Adaptivity in Web Based Learning Systems
Web-based educational systems are now becoming part of main stream education. As an essential component of the web based educational systems, the student model enables the system to provide individualised course contents and study guidance, and therefore to help the students with different backgrounds and knowledge levels to achieve their learning goals effectively on the web. A prototype stude...

This paper focuses on the prediction of student learning styles using data mining techniques within their institutions. This prediction was aimed at finding out how different learning styles are achieved within learning environments which are specifically influenced by already existing factors. These learning styles, have been affected by different factors that are mainly engraved and found wit...
