Hybridization from Possible Sexual Mis-imprinting: Molecular Characterization of Hybridization between Brown Sula Leucogaster and Blue-footed Boobies S. Nebouxii

چکیده
Approximately 9.2% of avian taxa are known to hybridize, a larger proportion than most vertebrate groups. However, rates of hybridization vary widely across avian orders: ducks and geese (Anseriformes) hybridize widely and frequently, while hybridization between swift species (Apodiformes) has never been recorded (Grant & Grant 1992). Seabirds, excluding the whiteheaded gull complex (Charadriiformes), are assumed to experience limited hybridization (Schreiber & Burger 2002). The potential for hybridization in seabirds may be lower than for other avian taxa because of the colonial nature of most species, elaborate courtship and thus stringent sexual selection, and/or the long-term pair bonds that many seabirds exhibit (Schreiber & Burger 2002).

Evidence for Asymmetrical Divergence-Gene Flow of Nuclear Loci, but Not Mitochondrial Loci, between Seabird Sister Species: Blue-Footed (Sula nebouxii) and Peruvian (S. variegata) Boobies
Understanding the process of speciation requires understanding how gene flow influences divergence. Recent analyses indicate that divergence can take place despite gene flow and that the sex chromosomes can exhibit different levels of gene flow than autosomes and mitochondrial DNA. Using an eight marker dataset including autosomal, z-linked, and mitochondrial loci we tested the hypothesis that ...
متن کاملEvidence for strong assortative mating, limited gene fl ow, and strong differentiation across the blue-footed/Peruvian booby hybrid zone in northern Peru
Hybrid zones represent natural laboratories in which the processes of divergence and genetic isolation can be examined. Th e generation and maintenance of a hybrid zone requires mispairing and successful reproduction between organisms that diff er in one or more heritable traits. Understanding the dynamics of hybridization between two species requires an understanding of the extent to which the...
متن کاملWeights, hematology, and serum chemistry of free-ranging brown boobies (Sula leucogaster) in Johnston Atoll, Central Pacific.
Hematologic and serum chemistry values are reported for 105 brown boobies (Sula leucogaster) from Johnston Atoll, Central Pacific. Hematocrit, estimated total plasma solids, total and differential white cell counts, serum glucose, calcium, phosphorus, uric acid, total protein, albumin, globulin, aspartate aminotransferase, and creatinine phosphokinase were analyzed. Hematologic and serum chemis...
متن کاملCould specialization to cold-water upwelling systems influence gene flow and population differentiation in marine organisms? A case study using the blue-footed booby, Sula nebouxii
Aim We assessed population differentiation and gene flow across the range of the blue-footed booby (Sula nebouxii) (1) to test the generality of the hypothesis that tropical seabirds exhibit higher levels of population genetic differentiation than their northern temperate counterparts, and (2) to determine if specialization to cold-water upwelling systems increases dispersal, and thus gene flow...
متن کاملPerinatal Androgens and Adult Behavior Vary with Nestling Social System in Siblicidal Boobies
BACKGROUND Exposure to androgens early in development, while activating adaptive aggressive behavior, may also exert long-lasting effects on non-target components of phenotype. Here we compare these organizational effects of perinatal androgens in closely related Nazca (Sula granti) and blue-footed (S. nebouxii) boobies that differ in neonatal social system. The older of two Nazca booby hatchli...
