The Trisected Triangle and the Hexagon Within: Marion Walter’s Theorem

چکیده
Armed only with a triangle and a dream, Marion Walter, a professor of mathematics at the University of Oregon, embarked on a quest for mathematical enlightenment. She battled rough angles and contemplated numerous strategies to find answers. In the end, Walter discovered characteristics of a triangle when each of its sides is trisected. Okay, Walter’s “quest” was not that exciting or epic, but she did determine the relationship between the area of a trisected triangle and the area of its ever-present central hexagonal region. Walter’s findings can best be explained in her theorem: the area of the central hexagonal region determined by the trisection of each side of a triangle and connecting the corresponding point with the opposite points with the opposite vertex is given by 1⁄10 the area of the original triangle (“Marion Walter's Theorem: Triangle and Hexagon areas” 2012). For my research paper, I used Geometer’s Sketchpad (GSP) to construct and trisect the sides of a triangle to prove the ratio in Walter’s Theorem; the ratio worked! Wanting to challenge the ratio again, I altered Walter’s theorem by trisecting not the sides of the triangle but the angles of the triangle. To do this, I used GSP again to construct and trisect the triangles’ angles; however, this time I used special case triangles instead of an arbitrary triangle. Unfortunately, Walter’s ratio did not hold up, but I was able to discover a new

Infinite Regular Hexagon Sequences on a Triangle
The well-known dual pair of Napoleon equilateral triangles intrinsic to each triangle is extended to infinite sequences of them, shown to be special cases of infinite regular hexagon sequences on each triangle. A set of hexagon-to-hexagon transformations, the hex operators, is defined for this purpose, a set forming an abelian monoid under function composition. The sequences result from arbitra...
متن کاملEnumeration of tilings of a hexagon with a maximal staircase and a unit triangle removed
In 1988, Proctor presented a result on plane partitions which implied a formula for the number of lozenge tilings of a hexagon with side-lengths a, b, c, a, b, c after removing a “maximal staircase.” More recently, Ciucu proved a weighted version of Proctor’s result. Here we present weighted and unweighted formulas for a similar region which has an additional unit triangle removed. We use Kuo’s...
متن کاملDiscrete Fourier Analysis, Cubature, and Interpolation on a Hexagon and a Triangle
Several problems of trigonometric approximation on a hexagon and a triangle are studied using the discrete Fourier transform and orthogonal polynomials of two variables. A discrete Fourier analysis on the regular hexagon is developed in detail, from which the analysis on the triangle is deduced. The results include cubature formulas and interpolation on these domains. In particular, a trigonome...
متن کاملAn Overview of Mathematical Contributions of Ghiyath al-Din Jamshid Al-Kashi [Kashani]
In this paper, we study Ghiyath al-Din Jamshid al-Kashi's (1380-1429 A.D.) main mathematical achievements. We discuss his al-Risala al-muhitiyya ("The Treatise on the Circumference"), Risala al-watar wa'l-jaib ("The Treatise on the Chord and Sine"), and Miftah al-hisab ("The Key of Arithmetic"). In particular, we look at al-Kashi's fundamental theorem, his calcula...
متن کاملCompleteness in Probabilistic Metric Spaces
The idea of probabilistic metric space was introduced by Menger and he showed that probabilistic metric spaces are generalizations of metric spaces. Thus, in this paper, we prove some of the important features and theorems and conclusions that are found in metric spaces. At the beginning of this paper, the distance distribution functions are proposed. These functions are essential in defining p...
