چکیده

A method for building a statistical shape model of sulci of the human brain cortex is described. The model includes sulcal fundi that are defined on a spherical map of the cortex. The sulcal fundi are first extracted in a semi-automatic way using an extension of the fast marching method. They are then transformed to curves on the unit sphere via a conformal mapping method that maps each cortical point to a point on the unit sphere. The curves that represent sulcal fundi are parameterized with piecewise constant-speed parameterizations. Intermediate points on these curves correspond to sulcal landmarks, which are used to build a point distribution model on the unit sphere. Statistical information of local properties of the sulci, such as curvature and depth, are embedded in the model. Experimental results are presented to show how the models are built.

Detection and statistical analysis of human cortical sulci.

Many studies dealing with the human brain use the spatial coordinate system of brain anatomy to localize functional regions. Unfortunately, brain anatomy, and especially cortical sulci, is characterized by a high interindividual variability. Specific tools called anatomical atlases must then be considered to make the interpretation of anatomical examinations easier. The work described here firs...

A New Division of the Human Claustrum Basis on the Anatomical Landmarks and Morphological Findings

Purpose: The subdivision of claustrum into parts in some species exists in literature. Those are mainly based on a pattern of its connections with various cortical areas, method of staining, immunoreactivity of its neurons etc. The aim of this study was the division of the human claustrum into different parts, for first time, based on morphology, density, arrangement of claustral neurons as wel...

Three-dimensional statistical analysis of sulcal variability in the human brain.

Morphometric variance of the human brain is qualitatively observable in surface features of the cortex. Statistical analysis of sulcal geometry will facilitate multisubject atlasing, neurosurgical studies, and multimodality brain mapping applications. This investigation describes the variability in location and geometry of five sulci surveyed in each hemisphere of six postmortem human brains pl...

Variation of the major sulci of the occipital lobe - A morphological study

Background: The occipital lobe of cerebrum is intimately related with visual function. The detailed anatomy of this lobe is essential for the surgeons and radiologists. The aim of the present study was to identify the variation of different sulci of the occipital lobe and find the relations between them. So, this study was done to evaluate the different parameters of these sulci by studying cer...

Sulci segmentation using geometric active contours

Sulci are groove-like regions lying in the depth of the cerebral cortex between gyri, which together, form a folded appearance in human and mammalian brains. Sulci play an important role in the structural analysis of the brain, morphometry (i.e., the measurement of brain structures), anatomical labeling and landmark-based registration. Moreover, sulcal morphological changes are related to corti...
