Thyroid function: fetal-maternal relationship at term.

چکیده
The present study was undertaken to examine serum parameters of thyroid function at term in normal pregnant women and their normal fetuses. Paired sera from 56 mothers and their respective newborn infants' umbilical cord were obtained at parturition. Maternal and fetal TSH, FT4, T4, FT3 and T3 levels were measured and the differences between these two groups were analysed. The levels of fetal serum TSH (8.86 +/- 5.82 IU/ml) were significantly higher than maternal TSH levels (3.32 +/- 3.3 IU/ml) (P < 0.001), but there was no significant difference between the fetal and maternal T4, FT4 and T3. On the other hand, cord FT3 levels (1.7 +/- 1.2 pg/dl) were significantly lower than maternal levels (2.7 +/- 1.4 pg/dl) (P < 0.001).

Fetal goitrous hypothyroidism due to maternal thyroid stimulation-blocking antibody: a case report.
Most fetal goitrous hypothyroidisms are reportedly caused by the maternal use of an antithyroid drug or fetal dyshormonogenesis. However, fetal goitrous hypothyroidism due to the transplacental passage of maternal thyroid stimulation-blocking antibody (TSBAb) is extremely rare. A woman at 28 weeks of gestation was found to have a fetal goiter by ultrasonography. Because the maternal serum showe...
متن کاملHypothyroidism and Thyroid Function Alterations During the Neonatal Period
The thyroid hormones, T4 and 3,5,3 ́-triiodothyronine (T3), are necessary for adequate growth and development (Greenberg AH et al., 1974; Zimmermann, 2011), throughout fetal and extrauterine life. These hormones regulate many metabolic processes: somatic growth, cardiac, pulmonary and bone maturation, central nervous system maturation, and neuronal differentiation, regulate oxygen consumption, a...
متن کاملCigarette smoking during pregnancy is associated with alterations in maternal and fetal thyroid function.
CONTEXT Studies in the general population have shown lower serum TSH levels in smokers as compared with nonsmokers. AIM Our aim was to examine whether smoking is associated with changes in thyroid function of pregnant women and their fetus. SUBJECTS AND METHODS We examined the relationship between smoking and thyroid function (serum TSH, free T4, and free T3) in two independent cohorts of p...

The objectives of the present study were to investigate the prevalence of histologic thyroids lesions and the respective thyroid hormones changes of ewes in an endemic goiter region and to find out any impact of this condition on the fetal thyroid structures and serum thyroid hormones. In the present study a total number of 100 pregnant ewes and their fetuses slaughtered at slaughterhouse were...
متن کاملMaternal hypothyroxinemia influences glucose transporter expression in fetal brain and placenta.
The influence of maternal hypothyroxinemia on the expression of the glucose transporters, GLUT1 and GLUT3, in rat fetal brain and placenta was investigated. Fetal growth was retarded in hypothyroxinemic pregnancies, but only before the onset of fetal thyroid hormone synthesis. Placental weights were normal, but placental total protein concentration was reduced at 19 days gestation (dg). Immunob...
